My W Reg 1.8 Vvti 140bhp Celica

Hi all, am new here and wondering if anyone can help me.

I did a rather stupid thing, I was racing a Seat Leon FR series in my celica but I didn't have much oil in the engine. On my way home my baby started to sound like a tractor and I am worried this could set me back quite a bit.

The noise is classed as knocking and I have been told it sounds like a problem in the bottom end of the engine.

Has anyone else encountered a similar problem or have any advice on what I need to do and how much it is likely to cost?

Many thanks in anticipation.

sounds to me like the only thing that'll help this is a new engine bud :(

I'm sure there was a problem with early 140's and the big ends going though .

Hopes it ok though . :)

Yep, big prob for early G7 140's, the oil usage / loss and subsequent issues. Top it up again, you may have got lucky. However, expect to Shell out for a new engine for the reason above. Sorry fella... :(

Thanks for the advice so far people.

I had considered another engine, would anyone reccomend that I put another 2nd hand one in as a new one would be out of my price range?

Does anyone know if there is certain parts that need replacing?

Also what I would be grateful of is a few diagrams of my engine, I can't seem to find much on the net and the only manuals I can find are on CD which I am struggling to find. Did Haynes do a manual for the gen 7?

The enine is the 1zz fe.

My celica is yellow with back momo corse rims 17". Will try and get photo on here soon.

I had the same problem with my engine. Took it to the local main dealer and the very unhelpful chap told me something was wrong with the bottom end. Wouldn't give me any idea what exactly, or how much it could cost. Then told me I shouldn't drive it away as I would be doing more damage. Might as well just give them a blank cheque! :censor:

Luckly my uncle works for the AA and he recommended a local garage that rebuilds engines. They took a look and said it was the crank shaft, and would cost £1000 to fix it.

However when they took the engine apart they called to say that the crank shaft was fine and it was just the bearings had got all scratched and could be replaced for £350.

Since then had absolutley no problems at all. So might not be as bad as you fear

Templeton ----- Many thanx for your reply, I noticed that you are a new member and I am very grateful that you posted your message especially if you only joined to post that for me.

It sounds like you had exactly the same experience as me going to your local Toyota dealers. The chap that advised me said it was damage to the bottom end of the engine and could cost up to £5000 to repair!!!!!

They offered £2000 part ex :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Got my dad (pretty good with cars) to look at it and is currently replacing certain parts, I wont pretend I know which ones or how but I dont think things are as bad as first feared.

still lessons to be learned, check your oil often, Fu** the main dealers and celica's rule. :toast:

Yeah been browsing on here for a couple of years now picking up the odd bit of information. I'm not really mechanically minded myself and when I read your post I remembered how gutted and mad at myself I was at the time.

When the engine was taken apart the chap who phoned said it looks like a problem they get with quite a few Alfa Romeos, and changing the bearings works on them, so he advised that it may work for mine too.

Let us know the outcome.

Well thanks again. I was pretty mad with myself to say the least. Not sure it is so much the bearings but parts like the crank and timing chain, sparkplugs e.t.c are being replaced. Along with a new clutch.

not sure if you have fixed the problem but it will be the big end bearings on there way or have already seized, very common problem on zz engines 2000-2003.if you remove the oil pan and remove the big end caps you will be able to view them.if the crank pins arnt damaged you should be ok with just replacing the big end bearings but if they are damaged im afraid its a full engine strip to remove the crank and replace with new.hope this helps.any questions please ask as im a expert in this field

As fazzer says but worth checking that the pistons haven't been clobbering the cylinder head too. Otherwise they could break and make a bid for freedom through the side of the block
