I have just last week installed a new cd mp3 radio into my dads Avensis.

A single din will fit underneath the top part of the original radio, the only

problem is that you will be left with a bit of a gap around your new radio.

What I did was took the front face of the original cd player part and cut around

it with a hacksaw to make a fascia to cover up the gap. I used the cage from the

new radio as a guide to work out how much to cut away, I basically put the cage

up against the cd player face and marked where the excess would be, actually I

didn't need to mark it as on the reverse of the face there are notches in the

moulding which actually line up with the cage. This was a bit tricky but I have

done this sort of thing before, I enjoy a challenge.

After cutting out a fascia adaptor from the front of the cd player, I rubbed it

down and painted it black as I had made a few scratch marks from where I had

cut it, be sure to use plastic primer first.

Once the paint had dried, I stuck it on to the console using hot glue, was a bit

tricky, had to have someone steady the console while I put the glue on and held

it for five minutes while the glue cooled down, I wouldn't use super glue as it

will evaporate when drying and can make a mess on the console.

To get the console out take out the ashtray and then pull at the bottom of the

console it will come away as it is just clipped in, you will find that you

won't be able to pull the console all the way out, this is because at the back

of the radio on either side are another two clips, you have to lift the console

up a bit and then pull towards you, it's a bit tricky the first time you do it.

Once the console is released disconnect all the cables and the console will come

out completely, you can now unscrew the radio from the console and fit your new

radio underneath the top part of the original radio, you will need to buy an iso

adaptor so you can plug the radio into the Toyota connector.

You will need to fix your new radio onto the brackets that your original cd

player is fixed to, you will find that there are holes on the new radio that will line up with the bracket.

The other good thing is that your clock and trip computer will still work.

I hope this all makes sense, if your not sure just ask.

As far as I am aware nobody manufactures fascia adaptors for the avensis.

This is the radio that I fitted into my dads car,

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pioneer-de...rol-p-5666.html if

you have remote control on your steering wheel you can by an adaptor lead for

this.

I also upgraded the front Speakers which are pop riveted in, I just drilled the

rivets out. The original Speakers are 13cm or 16cm, I can't remember now, but

anyway they are smaller than the 17cm/6.5 inch Pioneer Dual cone Speakers that

I fitted. I fixed them directly to the door without an adaptor as they fitted

perfect and are slim enough so as not to catch the glass window, I drilled four

holes and screwed the speakers in with self taping screws, make sure the screws are not to long or they will catch the window.

I would advise to use a speaker adaptor if your speakers are quite deep, also

you will need to cut the original speaker connector and attach spade connectors or whatever you wish so you can connect up the new speakers, make sure you make a note of which wire is negative and which is positive (polarity)before you cut of the original connector, if you look at it closely you will see + and - on the connector showing you which wire is which.

I also connected a pair of Maystar Tweeters which I fitted on to the back of the door mirror plastic again this was tricky but it all sounds so much better than stock now.

If you are going to fit tweeters you will find that the wiring is already in place, there is a connector just by the door pull handle you will need spade connectors, make sure the polarity is correct trace it back to the Speakers if you need to.

could a double din fit if the upper part is removed as well?

im guessing the gap would increase in size...

I should imagine a double din will fit, but you will still have the problem with there being a gap at the bottom, this is due to the shape of the hole.

I kept the top part of the radio as my dad wanted to keep the clock, trip computer and temp display.

  • 2 weeks later...

yes thats only for the verso.

ok so ive changed the headunit you were right only the cd part has to be removed.

theres a gap either side but its not too bad i will fill it in with some customized cut black plastic.

looks good and quite pleased.

it does not fit a double din because the upper unit fits into a bracket that is slimmer than the one below hence a double din unit will not fit.

Hi tsportmark,

Thanks for your information on this forum. Your information is reallly useful. I am planning to change my cd player in toyoto avensis 2002 model.

Could you please check whether this model will fit in my car : VR3-BLUETOOTH CD Player/RDS Radio USB/SD,MP3 Car Stereo. If you type the above model in eBay you will get some results.

Do I require any iso adapters to fix the above cd player into my car. After putting the new player does my sattelite navigation audio works.

you help is appreciated.

regards

Hi

I have fitted a Blaunpkt DAB54 (single DIN) in mine and its a big improvent - if you fit an Alpine or kenwood it should sound even betteras Blaupuknt are the best(but I am fussy) . It fitted where the CD slot is so you can keep the original radio control and display. You can get away without using a faceplate adapter (I cant find one) but there will be a small gap on each side. I am sure it would be easy to fabricate something to hide this small gap if you can be bothered . You will need an aerial and wiring loom adaptor (£11). Took me about 30min - but the console/control housing took a bit of wriggling about to free. This was due to the 2 white lugs (pegs) that slot into a bracket at the back of the dash and help fix the console to the main dash housing.

By the way I haven't changed the Speakers as. The stock Speakers ar OKish and I am not sure if its worth the expense unless I fit a my old alpine 4 channel amp (but dont know where to put oit - any sugestions)

Hope this helps
