205/50/16 Tyre

Is there any danger in putting a wider tyre on a thinner standard rim?

The standard rim is 195 wide. is it ok to put a 205 on a 195 rim?

e.g.

If you go into a fast corner and swing it in hard are you in danger of the tyre coming completly off?

Otherwise playing it safe i find the standard tyre "Turanza" 195/55/16 a bit rubbish,

what are the best tyre to fit goin with 195/50/16?

Thanks!

I think the standard 16" wheels are designed to fit both the standard tyre size and 205/50/16 size so there's no danger of them coming off. Toyota opted for a slimmer tyre.

The Auris TR rides on 16" wheels with 205/50/16 tyres fitted as standard!

It'll go on fine.

It's not much wider than standard obviously but you might notice a bit more tramlining/aquaplaning.

Insurance might need to be informed aswell. :(

205/50x16 will fit without any problems.. the compressor has 215/45x17 as standard.

There is more often than not 2 sizes for each car.. an alternative size if you can't get hold of the standard size.. in this case the alternative IS 205/50x16.

I did this conversion back in 2003 on my old T-Sport.

If you want my opinion, don't do it.

I totally ruined the tight handling of the car with more roll on the sidewalls.

I fitted 205 Pirelli's and the car was rubbish on corners, even with the just released TTE lowered spring kit on it.

I spent a fortune spoiling a good car :(

I use 205/50/16 goodyear F1 and no problems, but the car already came with it when I have bought it.

Never tried the 195, but the car handles very well. The tein coilovers and the tte struct bar might help.

As I said, with the 205's you get more sidewall roll and the car doesn't seem as tight.

Saying that, it's personal choice at the end of the day

Probably 195s as that's what Toyota put on originally!

It's just a shame there isn't more choice in the 195 size.

That said Toyo Proxes T1-Rs are supposed to be fantastic. Or Vredestein Sportrac 3s should do well too.

  • 3 months later...

Just to note, i know this is a bump from a fairly old thread, but i put 205/50/16s Eagle F1s on my car... the handling is actually better now, not noticed anything bad yet... really grippy decent tyres. Very impressed, and they aren't even bedded in properly yet.

Absolutely kick the ***** of the 195/55/16 Michelen Pilot Primacys i had on there before (came with the car)

Phoned up greenlight, and they didn't have any issues, didn't even charge admin fees.

Don't wish to sound like an advert, but they really are awesome. They do insurance based on BHP... as long as i stay under 210bhp i'll only have to pay admin fees (£25)... sometimes they might even waive those :) After that i think it was a £45 premium increase.
