New Clutch

I have just had a new clutch fitted to my CTS under warranty. Have to say it is much better now! No more funny smells. Smooth gear changes and soft clutch pedal! :) Apparantly the flywheel had to be re-cut? Anyone know what this means? Once I get the pads and front tyres done, I'm gonna spend a whole day detailing her, then fall in love all over again!!! :yahoo:

having the flywheel cut means its been skimmed, to make it nice and flat again so that the clutch plates sit on nicely, so it been lightened a bit as well

My new clutch is rapidly getting back to just how it was before! :( I am beginning to think that one of the following is true:

A) They rushed the job and haven't fiited it properly. They delivered the car 25 mins late back to the missus as they hadn't quite fininshed!

B: The flywheel that they "skimmed" is buggered!

Or C) It's just a characteristic of the car and I shall have to get used to it!

Shame it's going back to how it was/ :(

It sounds like it's just the way the car is though. As long as there's no actualy slip (foot down in high gear, engine revs but speed doesn't pick up) then I wouldn't worry about it.

It's easy to get used to being gentle setting off without making the clutch smell. I did it a few times when I first got the car but now I've got used to it I don't get any smells on steep hills or anything. The car will pull off fine with 2k on the rev counter on pretty much any gradient without any nasty smells. I find anything over 3k is likely to get the stink! Which is fair enough really 'cause that's a fair amount of slip between the engine and the wheels seeing as at 3k rpm in 1st the car would normally doing about 14mph.

My clutch has a funny feel to it when i change up above 4000 revs and more. As you push the clutch in you can feel it as your foot goes closer to the floor, it feels weird as if it is not acting freely? Havent gota clue what i am on about just trying to describe the feeling. You can proper feel it through your foot everytime you change up it doesn't feel smooth at all? any ideas? i have a compressor!

That is the exact same feeling I get through the clutch pedal! I'm beginning to think it is just a characteristic of the clutch/gearbox used on these cars.

Is that why you had a new clutch fitted?

Dealer offered to replace my clutch under warranty as he said it was 'heavy' and he 'wanted it right for you', Anyway, when the car came back the only difference was to my pocket, for the new plate.

There's a fella at my work with a TSport, was speaking to him today about the car, he said he's had two and they're both heavy on the clutch and stall very easily in 1st/reverse, so it does seem to be built in.

Fingers crossed.... Still on original cluth at 58k miles and the clutch action is fine. Travels freely and i have never had a smelly experience except once on a 45 degree climb in reverse from stand!

How much would a new clutch cost outside of warranty?

How long should the Std clutch last for on average? (Just so I can start to save for the future)

Guys, just asked Mr T out of curious for a new clutch... I explained that the clutch is slipping and probably just the plates are worn... And...

£730.

CRIKEY!

£730 OUCH !

Its it worth just buying the clutch kit and installing it yourself, or is it just easer to take it like a man and get one from Mr T

i fitted a 'blue print' replacment clutch a few months agos, it fixed alot of the issues i had with the Tsport, noisy under engine breaking etc... When i changed the clutch (plate, cover and bearing), the plate wasn't too worn i.e. it wasn't down to the rivets but the bearing was screwed and obviously the cover was fine. Wishing i spent a bit more on parts and got a blitz or similar though.

I changed mine at 51K....

Ask around at other garages. When i had my Yaris Mr T quoted £600 for a clutch.

Local garage, genuine Toyota clutch £350!

  • 7 months later...

okay i bought a 2001/02 corolla t sport 1.8 vvti-l its the very first model of the dreaded clutch, :( it had two previous owners-me being the third, its currently done 58,000 miles (fsh) and is in need of a new clutch-as im getting all the tell tale signs of the wear and tear on these corolla t sport clutches, like high clutch pedal and slipping-when u put your foot down on the accelerator-anyway finally had enough oof it and went to mr-t for a clutch replacement-this was last tues the 8th jan 2008-to no great surprise the clutch kit (brand new) cost me £195

now i have a toyota specialist in birmingham this guy knows everything about clutches and especially toyota cars and this version of it-(i know hard to believe, but he knows alot-almost like a yoda-style person when it comes to this particular range of car) he said he would fit it-took it to mr-t and they said it would cost me around 500 quid to fix- so naturally i went back to this toyota specialist who said he'd fit the clutch and get the clutch kit direvtly from toytoa at a cost of £280!!great deal!!! thanx mr-t i always knew you were useless!!!!

anyway the point of this is bascially to the last two threads-now my garage mate said that the car does not a have a dual mass fly wheel so that does not need replacing, considering my car is the oldest and very first model i think thats pretty good-knowing the clutch i had in there was made of spit and glue-anyway he changed the clutch and straight away my mechanic guy said this clutch is very different to the ones he usually gets from toyota-he reckons the whole clutch has been more tightly designed to cater for the excessive revving u get for this model of car-he was amazed by how different the clutch looked from the old one-therefore im pretty sure that the clutch he has fitted is the difinitive clutch for the car-anyone suffereing from clutch slippage, hard to get into reverse gear, or a high biting point pls just use toyotas new clutch its an absolute dream-the clutch bites nicely and the power on the wheels now makes this car seem like a different beast altogether!

he told me b4 he fitted that he tried bluprint, clutches japtech, and an oem clutch kit and they all came back from various owners complaining about jumping/jerking cars and gears not responding how they should ect ect ect....by all means get a jap clutch ive just heard from a few links and this guy that they actually make the var worse and are prone to wearing out alot quicker. like i said my car works beautifully-he told me the flywheel is fine-and doesnt need replacing

oh yeah key point here-the clutch from toyota comes with a 3 year warrenty-now my understanding is that they only came with a years warrenty, further evidence that this clutch is now working beautifully in this car-sooo if u are having any problems with the problems mentioned above from all the research ive done (at least 2 months) toyotas clutch is the one to use-i love this car its even more brilliant now!!!why couldnt they just have released this clutch when the car was first released-??

anyway hope this helps anyone who had the same problem as me-:rolleyes::rolleyes:
