Auris Multi-mode

Hi

I’m new to this forum and would be grateful for anyone’s experience of/opinions on the Auris’ multi-mode transmission. I took delivery of a 1.6 T Spirit Multi-Mode (with Style, Technology & Protection packs) on 30 April.

The car drives okay in manual mode – gear-changes are smooth and easy. Additionally, in ‘sport mode’ (providing that road conditions are conducive) you can put your foot down and accelerate through the gears quite smoothly (lifting off the gas at the point of gear-change).

It is, however, in the ‘normal’ (‘economy’) mode where my frustrations and disillusionment kick in!! As this is supposed to be the main mode for achieving maximum fuel economy, I can’t understand why it appears to be so problematic. The car changes from first up to fifth before I’ve reached 20 mph! True, if you really press your right foot down, the car will hold each gear for a bit longer, but as soon as you ease off the accelerator it goes up another gear. This seems crazy and illogical as you’d expect it to either hold the gear you’re in, or change to a lower gear, if anything. It is also disturbing if you suddenly need to accelerate – as there is a long pause before anything seems to happen!

I’d be very grateful for any advice (I know I should have insisted on a test drive of a multi-mode vehicle before ordering it!)

Hi,

I also got a new Auris 1.6 multimode and all the "problems" you wrote about are really true, if i could i whould buy the auris with a manual gear but here in Israel they sell just multimode cofiguration.

anyhow, i tryied this week to adjusy my self to the regular "E" mode and after a few rides to work and back home i started to control it. the thing that make me crazy is that sometime the gear get "jammed" like today when i tryied to go fast between cars in a highway one time the engine lost all his power, and went to 6000 Rpm, like it got to "N", i don't know why that happend but after 2 secound it got into gear again.

also i feel like the gear is stoping the engine to really use all of it's power, specially when the car litterely stops when it changes from 1st to 2nd and sometime even to 3rd.

after all this i really like driving my new auris and i hope maybe there will be an update to this gear so toyota can install in my car.

Hi Nir

Thanks for your reply. I'm pleased that I'm not the only person experiencing problems adjusting to multi-mode transmission! I haven't as yet experienced the problem you described where the engine momentarily loses power like it's gone into neutral - I'll be waiting for that to happen now! It looks as though I'm going to have to persevere in the hope that I will eventually get used to it.

I posted a good few months back complaining about the problems I was experiencing with my 1.6 M/M Auris T Spirit (delivery of which took place over seven months ago). Subsequently, I’ve read the many negative comments posted by other potential/actual Auris Multi-Mode owners - & could fully empathise with the sentiments expressed!! HOWEVER, I have persevered with the damned thing – and, guess what, I think I’m finally growing to like it!!

I’ve gone through numerous phases of thinking that I’ve got to part-exchange this wretched car for something else - & to hell with the cost – BUT, over the last couple of months, reality has finally begun to hit home. My Auris T Spirit (with Tech, Protection & Style packs) really would take some beating! As everyone knows, when you get a car with a useful feature you’ve never had before, this can become a ‘must-have’ for any future vehicle you wish to purchase. In the case of my Auris, I have not (as yet) been able to find any other vehicle – in the same price bracket which anywhere near matches this excellent specification!!

Additionally, it is a very nippy car & (with the rising price of petrol) I find it very economical to run.

For these reasons, I decided that I was going to stick with it! YES, it changes up to fifth gear before I’ve reached 30mph (& occasionally does other strange things) - BUT I can override this (using paddle/gear shift), if not appropriate! Apparently, l am told, that even on a Mk 5 Golf GTI (with it’s acclaimed DSG gearbox) 6th gear is engaged at around 35 mph.

Hi Guys.. I tottally agree with Phil0600... to put it simply........ RE LEARN HOW TO DRIVE.... so to be so frank about it and it wont be easy but its worth it in the end... my only real problem with the auris is that i think its ben built to cheaply...shame...

I'm about to purchase the Auris in Israel and am very concerned about what I'm reading. Also several other things...why does it have 9 airbags in the UK but only 4 here? Will the E mode cause problems driving in the hills of Jerusalem? I would greatly appreciate quick responses so I can make my final decision. I love the car otherwise! Thanks very much in advance. Also, I would love to hear if Nir feels better or worse about the car since he wrote this post last year.

hi 'Stephanie Kahn' -

"Bachoc ha ba la forum haze , ve le balii auris be israel" (I try to write in hebrew with english letters)

I am also from Israel , Auris-luxury-black from may 2007 .

I love this car.

Follow my old posts here and also my tips for mmt-owner.

And don't be too concerned - the Auris is a unique and 'super" car

the user Auris2008 is from Israel, has the MMT and likes it so I really dont think this gearbox will cause any problems with your local hills =) The only thing that I could think regarding hills (and something my girlfriend hates) is that the car will roll backwards when you take a full stop on a hill although you have it in "D/E". This doesn't happen with fully automatic cars.

Im quite pleased with the MMT. Some are pleased with it, some are not. Some hate the Auris, some love the Auris. This love/hate-thing happens with everything.

Regarding the airbags. It may be because European buyinghabits are greatly effected by the NCAP-results and therefor Toyota has implementated more airbags to get an higher results on the European model. Also, it might be that Toyota had to lower the prices on the car in Israel because of the generel wellfare of the people. Airbags cost a heck alot of money. My educated guess..

Edit:

auris2008 beat me :D

Hello

Today I placed an order for a Auris 1.6 petrol MMT didnt test drive it (yes i know big mistake), kinda ordered it in a rush decision.

After reading the forum the MMT is really worrying me ( thinking should have got a manual), however the threads seems to posted a while back, so is any recent owners having problems with MMT?

you will love it when you get used to it! the only problem i have with the mmt is that i find it changes down to 1st gear too early when slowing down and you end up reving the nuts off it. other than that it is a lovely relaxing car to drive :)

'simon_d' u are right - this point drive me crazy.

We musy do something to force Toyota to modifing the mmt's software.

Can u send e-mail to Toyota-Europe to get their official respond why the mmt-software force down to 1th gear in too high speed (below 18 KM), their respond to the ability to do the "snow-mode" ,and why it is not mention in the Manual-Book?

Does this going to 1st gear thing happen in any mode or just in M mode?

also how much is 18km in mph?

18KM = 11 Miles

Yes it is happen also in E mode

damn that way early for 1st.

No way to override it?

yes we can - if we =all mmt owners=will force Toyota to upgrade the software and down the speed it going down to 1th.

You and all the mmt-owner , must email to them and make a huge pressure-they can't ignore us

But if we only post it here a million times - nothing will happen !!!

So when do you do the "snow mode"

When pulling away in snowy conditions.......................It helps avoid wheelspin by engaging a higher gear

I have been driving my multi mode for all of a day now and whilst I haven't tried or experienced the gear shifting down problem, what I have noticed is that gearing up is extremely neck jerking. I mea that literally. It's almost as if the car flatlines and takes a couple of seconds to decide whether it needs to change gears or not. All whilst accelerating. I am only hoping this 'jerkiness' is as a result of the car's newness and that once it is worn in, it will be a smoother ride.

The best way is to drive the MM in Manual Mode and use the gear paddles freely even going up and down two steps ( two quickly clicks) - from 2th to 4th or from 3th to 5th - or to slowdown from 5th to 3th or from 4th to 2th in curves uphills or downhills, it is more sporty driving ( like "Porsche" ) and more safety too.

I do most of the time and it is SUPER

Today I tried driving this way too and still it slumps taking a few seconds before changing.

I have owned my Auris " Multimode " for 12 months and to be honest it is a pain in the rear, I have driven cars for over 40 years manual and automatic gear-boxes, so I thought when after a test drive I would get use to this new ! mulitmode gearbox, but my in my opinion (MY), it is a pain in the !Removed!, a prime example, the Paddle Shift, OK if you are going in a straight line ! but useless if you are going round a corner, that is when it becomes impossible to use and as for the E-mode, coming too a stop at traffic lights etc; you personaly brake, the grear-box changes down and you come to a jeking/bouncing halt.

I have to be honest and say that if it was not for the superior fuel consumption that I get from the Auris compared to my last car and because it is very difficult to drive, I am sorry to say I would not recommend the Auris Mulitmode to any-one thinking of purchasing a new car, the manual gear-box may be a different expirience entirely ! ! !

Hi

I started this post in 2007 & as I've not posted for a good while, I thought I'd make another contribution to the MMT debate. As I've said before, for about the first nine months I hated the car; for the last fifteen I've loved it! It really did take a lot of getting used to and it did require the acquisition of a very different driving style through endless experimentation, but after I'd mastered it I've never looked back. Whilst I fully appreciate the views expressed by other posters that such adjustments to their driving style shouldn't be necessary, unfortunately with this type of transmission - which is designed to be economical in terms of mpg & C02 emissions - IT IS (and this is also the case with similar transmissions introduced by other manufacturers). In terms of durability/reliability, I can only say that up to now (approaching two years) I haven't had any problems - touch wood!

I drive mine in 'E' mode all the time, but sometimes use the paddle shifts (on straight roads!). A very useful technique I discovered over twelve months ago, is to move the gearshift into neutral when approaching a junction or traffic lights as this avoids any jerkiness when stopping (and probably causes less engine/clutch wear). If the lights change & you don't need to come to a complete stop, just pop the gear lever back into 'E' mode & amazingly the gearbox will select the appropriate gear for you to accelerate again. I'm also finding the 'changing down to first gear' issue less of a problem these days.

In conclusion, I am seriously considering getting another MMT when the new 1.6 Valvematic 132 DIN hp version is available.

Hope this helps

Regards

Phil
