This is worrying me guys, as my DVLA document states I have a Celica GT, and the insurance for this GT way cheaper than SS-II which is a ST202 Import Celica i believe?

So what do you ST202 owners like me quote for - a GT or SS2? Need help fast as I need to renew soon.

I thought st202 was the engine type  ?

mines a uk model (gen 6) with the rectangle rear plate, imports have the square plates to the rear if i remember righty...

OK if you haven't already sorted this then you need to start from the beginning and find out what engine your import has. Likely it is the 3SGE or it could be 3SFE. Look under the bonnet and find out the model number.

SS-I

Engine model = 3S.FE

Model number on VIN for Manual-------- E-ST202-BLMGK

Model number on VIN for Automatic------E-ST202-BLPGK

SS-II

Engine Model = 3S-GE

Model number on VIN for Manual---------E-ST202-BLMVF

Model number on VIN for Automatic-----E-ST202-BLPVF

If it is the 3SGE (likely) then it is an SS2, 3SFE is SS1. It is not a GT. It should really be insured as SS2 ( or SS1) and not GT. But your V5 document from DVLA says GT on it? This is down to whoever registered it not knowing the differences.

You need to insure it as an import, to not do so will invalidate any claim. Some insurers may not recognse the differences but yours clearly does as it is giving you the 2 options. You need to be upfront really, personally I would contact the DVLA and get the document amended (my V5 just says celica and doesn't say it is an SS2 (or GT)) and get it insured as a SS2. Just so everything is above board and there is no way an insurance company can sting you.

Let us know how you get on. If the difference in premium is alot then maybe look around to other insurers who wont charge you loads because it's an import.

3sfe is a GT - both 20.16v engines .

Toyota realised the single cam wasnt enough and introduced a twin cam .

Its an older version GT .

We just went through this with Chris and his 3sfe (which is now a 3sge!) and his insurance company .

Thanks for the advice, mine is the SS2 (no plate area art back is more square) http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/toyota/celica/1996_6/5740/

Going into fine details here. I'll change the V5 about the name change. So do I write 'Celica SS-II' instead of 'Celica GT'. I think I'll write SS2 as in SS-II and not SSii. Just to be picky.

Thanks all.

Yeah but it is not a GT because they were sold in UK as GT and SS1, SS2 in Japan.

So only a UK car should officially be called GT. They also produced the SS1 with 3SFE alongside the SS2 with 3SGE right up until 1999 as the more economical version.

Alot of importers don't know the difference between the Jap SS1 and 2 so some people buy the SS1 thinking they are the equivalent of the UK GT, which they are not.

Thanks for the advice, mine is the SS2 (no plate area at back is more square)

Thanks all.

But that doesn't mean it is an SS2, as said before there is a possibility it could be an SS1, need to check model number!

This doesn't sound applicable to the ST202, I am fairly sure the SS1 3sfe were all twincam, am open to correction though

My V5 for the Sera just says Toyota Coupe !

Doesn't matter to me though, as there aren't the variants that the Celica has to contend with. It's clearly a Sera !

check the chassis number if it ST firstly its an import-- JT is the uk variant , also jap vin numbers are 11 digits iirc - uk models are 17 digits long.

the rear number plate holders are changeable so dont use that to confirm its id.

  • 2 weeks later...

as gt booster says:

check the chassis numbers and letters, it will probably be a SSII, which is a ST202 BLMVF code and it will have the `super-strut`, if it is a SSII do a search on `superstrut`

and if the V5 is wrong, send it back corrected, i belive you just add a note with it, describeing the discrepance, most important as been said, make sure you insure it as a SSII import if thats what it is, not what is states on the V5 as this is quite a common problem with imports when thay are registered and you dont want to end-up in the sh=te i something goes wrong!
