Damage To Rear Bumper On Avensis 2002 Model...

Hi,

I've got a Mark 2 Avensis Vermont (2002) and I had a rather unfortunate scrape in the car the other day hitting a low wall whilst dong a 3 point turn which ended up cracking my rear bumper. I've attached a pic of the damage below!! Its like when you see old cracked paint on a wall.

Just wondering if anyone else has done the same and how much it cost to repair, or how I would go about repairing? Could I get it smoothed over and resprayed/painted, or is it a case of a whole new bumper?

Its caught part of the paintwork underneath the bumper too. I did think about peeling back the cracked bits and just smoothing it over with a sander for the time being or should I leave it?

Please help!!

Thanks

I suggest you take the car to a good body shop they may have a repair scheme for it.

My son got hit from behind in his 03 1.8 Avensis and he had a new bumper but as the other driver was at fault it was paid for by his insurance.

I do not think it is a job I would do myself. You may have a mate who is skilled in this type of repair.!!!

I think it should be repairable you need to look to make sure the bumper has not been wrung also if you take it to a body shop make sure they know that it is not an insurance job as otherwise you will pay a premium as an insurance job means high prices

Thanks guys... I will get it to a repair shop when I can. It needs to go in for a service soon so might ask the guys at Toyota too. No doubt they'll say that it needs a new bumper!!

What do you mean by 'WRUNG'?? Bent?

:yahoo: Thanks!!

Nah its not wrung... literally just a scraping of the paintwork/plastic on the bumper that has cracked the top layer. The photo probably doesn't show it very well??

If worse comes to the worse I'll just sand it down so its all smooth again and get it resprayed/retreated?... Can you do that?

I think the grey part is seperate from the lower section in which case you can probably change it yourself and touch in the lower bit if you are into the pristine look.

Had mine replaced last year as part of an insurance job but mine was hit so hard it shortened the boot floor by about an inch but due to the bumper flexing back out it didn't appear to be anything other than superficial.

Zin - I see you are in Kent. I can recommend Coachwork Renovations, Imperial Way, Gravesend - if they are within striking distance for you. Not cheap but they are very good

Cheers Penfold...

I'm only about 45 mins from Gravesend so its a possibilty. Thanks.

I've been getting quotes on rear bumpers and the bumpers seem to be the grey bit and also the colour coded bit underneath. Cheapest quote I've had so far is £60 inc VAT and delivered but the colour is different to mine. So would need to get it resprayed which will cost a bit.

have a word with your local college.

if they run training for panel beaters then you might get them to respray it for you at the cost of the paint only. worth a try.

  • 2 weeks later...

Do you reckon I could paint the bumper myself?? What sort of paint would I need??

I can get the bumper all smooth again, just a case of the bumper being 2 different colours!!
