Brakes. Knock Knock

Please could you fellow t-sport owners do a little test and see if yours does the same as mine....

Sometimes, when reversing, when I apply the footbrake to stop, theres a knock coming from the rear brake, passenger side. Just a single knock. I had this on a previous car and it was the pad moving in the caliper.

It also does it when going forwards, when you're nearing a halt, as long as there's a bit of forward motion, apply the handbrake to stop rather than the footbrake (i know you shouldn't, but its the easiest way to replicate the noise) the same knock noise appears. I doubt this is normal but would be grateful if you could check before I go back to dealers......again.

Sounds like the pads moving, mine does it in reverse, but only once.

Stop and continue going backwards and apply the brake and you won't hear it a second time (untill the next time).

Then you will hear it the first time you touch the brakes going forward.

It's the small movement of the pads in the caliper

I think it's a good sound as it shows the pads aren't stuck or seized.

Cheers for the reply mate. Do both of your rear brakes make the knock? Thing is, based on the theory of pads moving in the calipers, wouldn't all 4 brakes do it rather than just one? Or do all 4 do it on yours?

Have you tried the handbrake thing? Sounds like the same noise but this is when the car is going forward. I only started noticing it after I pulled the handbrake on when I was just about stopped. Best way is to coast at about 1mph and gently pull up and then release the handbrake a few times.

Yeah mine do the same thing, I can hear it click from both the rear wheels. Iv recently changed the rear pads tho so i suspect im gonna have to buy some new brake pad shims to cure the problem (the old ones where quite knackered). Im not looking forward to buying them tho, toyota charged me £12 for a set of the little pad retaining clips (they look like bent paper clips and probably worth about the same!) so god knows how much they are gonna charge for a full fitting kit

Haven't really noticed. It's more of a click.

No.

Is it a metallic click or more of a low, dull click?

It’s the sort of click that brakes pads make when moving in the calipers, like a metallic sound.

It’s obvious it’s from the brakes; if I open my door when reversing slowly on the drive I can hear it from the rear wheels.
