ive only had my 98 celica 3 days and love it to bits  .. (ive washed it twice )

i was thinking about some nice yellow brake calipers, but was wondering if there are any other options ? i was thinking about painting them... but they are rusty, so i'm not sure where to go from here ? .. thanks in advance

p.s. i still cant work out insurance companys, i was driving an m reg ford escort van (work purposes) and paying £375 a year, this cilica is only £190 a year

easiest way is to give them a good scrub with degreaser and wire wool, then paint them with Smooth Hammerite.

Available from DIY stores in plenty of colours !

Let me see the results as I want to paint mine too!

As for insurance mine was £280 Directline for a Celica GT 1996 - I'm over 35. So how come yours so cheap?

I've just done my calipers silver with Hammerite. Looks good on a silver car.

i rung round a few insurance peeps, they ranged from £400 to £190 (the £190 was with "coversure") .. gord knows how it was sooooo cheap .. i am also over 35, (39)

i will start painting up the calipers over the next few days, i will let you know what its like with a few pics (before and after)

Best way to do calipers (so far) I've found is too:

1. Remove wheel

2. Clamp your brake lines with a hose clamp

3. Remove the brake line from the back of the caliper (to be safe put a rag around the line, you DON'T want to spill brake fluid on anything, ESPECIALLY paint.)

4. Remove the two bolts from the back of the caliper which hold it "floating" in place.

5. Take the caliper aside to a work bench or whatever...

6. Now if you want to do it REALLY WELL, you should go and purchase a new seals kit for your caliper. ($45 NZ Dollars, does both sides for the rear)

7. If you have a seals kit you can carefully disassemble your piston(s) and guide bolts and you'll just have the Cast calipers left.

8. Grab your favorite high speed drill with wire brush and clean down all the "exterior" of the caliper. This does NOT include the inside of the piston cylinder etc. (If they are rusty you may want to consider new calipers.)

9. The wire brushing almost got mine perfectly clean, just grab a spray can of brake cleaner and clear off all the residue.

10. Hang the calipers up for painting from some wire or what ever you have lying around.

11. Mask off the areas you don't intend to paint.

12. Use a ceramic based high temperature brake paint for best results. Have a look at duplicolors range (google it) and paint away.

13. Give the paint time to dry, can't stress that enough otherwise it will flake off!

14. Reassemble calipers (refer to manual, or brain and do the disassembly in reverse) NB: plenty of grease on the piston is always good

15. Bolt caliper back on, brake line and bleed brakes.

Okay I know not EVERYTHING is covered, but its the general idea. My brakes came out pretty damn nice in candy Apple red ;-). Be careful when putting the pads and anti-squeal clips back in...I lost a little paint because they scrape quite a bit.

Good Luck!

This is probably a really stupid question, but is it not possible to paint the calipers without removing them?

Great, cheers, I imagine it's just a matter of being careful, and not getting paint on the discs

Yeah I managed to get paint on the discs  but I was doing the hubs too. Doesn't matter though, it comes off real easy when you actually use the brakes. Better to avoid if posible though
