Wheel Bearing

Anyone had to have a front wheel bearing replaced in their T-sport yet? Apparently mine needs changing around 40k costing £200+, or £160 at a local garage.

Been driving for 25 years and never had to change one before in any of my cars. Dealer says they have not had to do one either in over 2 years on any Toyota (none of the service staff have been with them any longer).

Any thoughts...

does it make any noises?

did they find it through a service?

Yes and yes.

They advised it probably was at the service but would require more investigation (at £45). It makes a noise whilst driving which increases in frequency with increased speed.

have you had any transmission work done recently on your car that would require driveshaft removal?

i have seen problems with hub nut tightning which causes the hub bearing to run off and causes exteme wear and play

unusual but not unheard of for a wheel bearing to go. One of the main causes is actually poor tracking and worn suspension (bushes/shocks/springs) as this places lateral load on the bearings.

when they are just spinning they'll last for 150k+ easily usually. its the lateral loads that screw them up.

£200 is a bit steep if you ask me. all they have to do is get the brake disc off and then put it on a press to get the bearing out.

Thanks for all responses.

I have had laser tracking done in the past and all was as it should have been. The last service did not flag up any suspension problems, but there is some edge tyre wear. Cost wise, all the local garages use a PC based repair system working off car reg, so its down to the hourly rate not the time. I'll see if I can get some discount at the dealers, its easy to go back if things are'nt quite right.

Thought a bit more last night...I did have a new clutch fitted at about 20k, and had Toyota lowering springs put on at some point followed by the laser tracking. Don't know if this could have caused it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, had the NS bearing replaced last week at dealer for over £200 but that included the 4 wheel tracking, which I would have had to pay on top of the local garage price. Sounds and feels lots better, mechanic said it came out in bits, but still had no idea why it should have gone so quickly. New front tyres and pads required next...Auris T180 is looking tempting but only in black with rear spoiler and lowering springs.
