I think we'd all agree it's pretty bland under the bonnet.

I've seen several pics where owners have painted the plastic covering and I am wanting to do the same. Now all I need is some advice from you helpful folks of what the best products to use are.

Plasikote spray paint, maybe? I dunno... As long as its reasonably heat resisatant, I guess it doesn't really matter too much!
