Is your A/C compressor kicking in when you press the button? If not the system may be low on gas/have a leak.

Hi mate- Sorry to hear about your problems- especially now summer is coming up.

As an air con engineer I would almost certainly say you have a charge issue- That is to say it is short on gas. I see you live fairly close to me- Im in Coalville. Have a look under the bonnet for a label telling you what gas it takes. It begines with an "R" for example "R-22" or "R-134a". If its on R-22 then I have some right here that you can have. I will even put it in the car and get it working for you. However if as I suspect it is on R-134a I have none and you will need to take it to a an AC service centre to get it fixed. Let me know and hopefully I can sort it for you for nothing. Hopefully being the key word in that phrase! If anybody else has any problems with Air con let me know- Its what I do for a living and may be able to help you out, even fix it if you are close. Cheers, Olly.

My ST had exactly the same problem last summer. Apparently the gas had escaped or level gone low or something. Anyway, he said that if you don't run it occasionally even in the winter, the seals dry out or perish due to lack of lubrication and the gas level goes low. New seals and a re-gas and it's still working sweet 12 months later.

Mine cost about £65 to re-gas locally, so not too bad

Hi mate, just had my avensis done this morning, I had the same problem. Only just had the car 1 month and a/c never worked. Light came on when switch pressed but nothing else happened. The compressor will not work if the system is low on gas. Took it to an independant a/c specialist local to me, £70 later and the a/c is working perfect! He told me that when they put the gas in they also put an ultra-violet dye in to check for leaks. Its exactly as you say, you must use the a/c even in winter to keep everything in good working order, I have a Volvo truck with a/c and its on all the time, the switch on the dash panel is to turn it off and not on! Incidently, I have seen in shops such as halfords/motosave etc, a diy kit to recharge the system yourself, its like an aerosol can with a limited amount of gas in it so this could work if the system is low. Regards Jed.
