Automatic Gearbox Question

Hi All,

First time on here and nice to meet you all.

I've just got an 05 RAV4, my 2nd after having a new 2002 one which we sold a few years ago but the need for space and the growing children means the BMW which replaced it is going and I'm once again back happy with Toyota!

I can't remember from my old 2002 RAV but with all other auto's you needed to have to depress the foot brake to allow you to move into drive from neutral. My Rav allows me to simply move the shifter down from N to D with no brake being applied.

Is this normal as I thought all autos did not allow this for safety sake?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi,

I know what you mean with regards to the shift lock button. I believe thats used when the shifter is locked and can't be moved when there's a problem.

What I was asking was that I was suprised you don't have to have your foot on the brake to allow it to go from neutral to drive. You still obviously have to push in the side button to move it from Park to Neutral.

Cheers,

check if your brake lights are working. it could be the brake light switch not working?

the shift lock is that if you want to push the car with no keys and want to move the gear liver put of the P position into the N so you can move it. most garages use this so they can move freely the car without the need of leaving the keys in the ignation.

1st Edit: if you press your brake pedal and push the big switch on the gear lever do you hear any relies clicking. this sound is comming from the fuse box on the drivers side. it might be that your relies is broken?

2nd Edit: never tried this to move from neutral to drive. will check this tomorrow.

both my Rav4's allow me to do this, so it should be normal.

i had misunderstood your question in the beginning. i thought that you could move it from P in to R,N or D without applying the brakes.

Not sure if this helps but on the last auto I owned (not a Toyota) you had to press the footbrake to move out of "P" but, thereafter, it was just the button on the lever that needed depressing when shifting from "N" to either "R" or "D"; ISTR the button also needed pressing when moving between 4 and 2.

with my rav 4 you only need to use the button on the lever when shifting from "N" to "R"
