Gen 6 Braking Issues

Okay fellas,

I've got a 1997 Celica SS-1, (ST202) Japanese import. Here in NZ we are required to get a WOF (Warrent of Fitness) every 6 months.

So anyway I took my car in and it failed on a rear braking imbalance, biased by like 37% to the left hand wheel, meaning the right hand wheel isn't braking enough.

I'm fairly well mechanically minded and like doing my own work...So I started off by eliminating things like replacing the old pads on the rear calipers, having the discs skimmed, adjusting the handbrake shoes etc which needed doing anyway. It still failed.

Next I took it to a garage and they pretty much said it's highly likely to be a partially seized caliper. So I went and got a new seals kit, whipped both calipers off, cleaned them out etc. The right hand one WAS a little sticky but after a bit of effort the seals were all replaced and they were nicely greased up etc. Put em back on and bled the brakes.

Took it in with fingers crossed expecting it to be perfect...IT FAILED AGAIN. No difference in the %.

Only thing I can think of now is that there is something hydraulically wrong, perhaps the proportioning valve is bung?

Any ideas or thoughts are much appreciated, otherwise its going the the brakes specialist :-(

Josh

Unlucky - Are there any flexi pipes to those calipers? If so the flexis degrade inside over time and end up working like a one way valve, although I'd probably be looking at the left hand one as it usually makes them brake too much

Just a thought though

Just to let you know, got it tested and it was the proportioning valve...In case anyone else has this problem.
