Check Engine Light-00' 4runner

I'm new to this website so my apologies if I haven't followed the normal course of things. I bought a used 2000 Toyota 4-Runner 4dr, SR5, V6 and it didn't have an owner's manual. My check engine light came on and I just brought it in to get checked out. The mechanic said that it says in the owners manual that if the check engine light comes on that you should check your gas cap and make sure it's on properly. He stated this is a very common problem with these make/models. Has anyone else seen or heard of this problem? Thanks.

Yes, what he told you is true, and is the case with many of the newer vehicles. If that doesn't solve your problem, it may be worth the +-$80 the dealer will charge you to run a diagnostic check. That way you would know what the actual problem is and what step to take next.
