Gt4 Water Question

hey guys, nice site you got here, looks like you all give some good quality info.

I recently bought my gt4, (AMAZING) and checking the oil is simple enough, but what about the water?? i open the radiator cap and can see its full of rusty looking water, which is fine.

But how often do you change it?

And i cant see clearly in the resovoir because its down the side of the Battery.

What water do you put in, and what is the rusty stuff?

Thanks

really you should change the coolant sounds like the previous owner has used tap water (big no no)

get it flushed out with a cooling system flush then refil with either toyota 4life or a good quality ethylene glycol long life antifreeze and distilled water mix (or get the pre mixed type. 4life isnt to bad a price from your toyota dealer and comes ready mixed.

if the rads full then the level is prolly ok. if you look down the opening you should see the level.

what year gt4 is it?

It's a 1994 model, japanese import. Any idea how much this pre-mix would cost mate? And the flush out liquid?

are you sure its rusty water and not red 4 life.

the header tank should have a length of rubber hose attatched it acts like a dipstick to check coolant level.

red 4 life is about 15 quid for 5 litres.

Yeah it does have the rubber hose connected to the dipstick. Except it has a wierd end on it, i.e loads of holes in it, my piont being, how does that tell you how much fluid is in the tank???

Plus i reckon the rusty water is in fact red4life, but its gone a bit rusty looking because it may need changed..

HOW OFTEN DOES IT NEED CHANGED?

the header tank has a hign n low mark on the side about maybe 2 inches from the bottom , if fluid shows on the rubber tube then there is enough coolant in the system.

not sure on the change intervals , - if you change it then that should do you for a good many years.

is it the 4 headlight model gt4 - with the charge cooler , that might need its contents changing too if its also rusty brown looking.

Ahh.. you have the ST205 which is the 250bhp model. Excellent choice my friend.

I used to have exactly the same colour and same black raise blocks for the spoiler. :crybaby:

The Charge cooler is the black square looking thing on top of the ngine with 2 hoses attached to the bottom of it. I will post a pic for you accordingly.

Its common practice to get a coolant flush and change every 5 years or so. I always get it done on any old performance cars i buy just for peace of mind unless i can see that its obviously just recently been changed.

i have loads of pdf files on the st205 anyone wants them drop me an email adress and they are yours for nowt .

as for the charge cooler it can be bunged up with oil residues thus not keeping the fluid inside as cool as its meant too , thus harming good performance , most take it off and rince it out with neat petrol , some change the spark plugs at this time also , due to access with cooler removed. some even lag the base of the charge cooler with heat resistant lagging - up the boost you up the running temperature , hence the cleaning and lagging. upping the boost on the st205 is pretty easy and can gain you 50 bhp for around £40 .

How come you got rid of your celica gt4 mate?? it looks great, clean as a whistle.

Is the charge cooler the huge black box in middle of the engine?? So that might need taking off and cleaning out. is it a relatively easy job? any guidelines or instructions??

thanks so much guys

Keighly Car Trade Centre and the place you mentioned might be linked from what i have been told and if that is the case then i would stongly stay away from there.

All the cars that i have personally seen at the KTC have been dogs..

ooh thats worth knowing, cheers buddy, when i phoned them up they said all the cars were newly imported or part exchanged from other buyers... have to say thogh, they shifted stock quite quick, judging from the autotrader that is... You know of any recommended japanese sports car sales places?? yorkshire is usually great for that, is it?

Depending on what you want... just speak to our own TOC trader Rash.

Click on his name in my signature and you will get his contact details. He also has his own section at the botton of the main forum page.

I have got that GT4 and MR2 turbo from him and he has also sold to quite a few members on here now and is well respected. :)

This is his website...

www.ramotors.co.uk

If you click on the past cars you will only a small percentage of the cars he has gone through. :)

erm try taking the small radiator cap off it . and peer inside . to drain it there is a small tap to the left of the bottom of the radiator , almost behind the left hand fog light .

ps- no pdf files , dumb wife threw my old cds out = numpty.
