I've got a 1990 Celica ST us spec (brought it over with me) 147000 miles on clock. Started to have blue smoke coming out of exaust when I start in morning. After @ 1 mile it goes ok. Other than that its great. Just had full service. One mechanic sugested it could be the rings on pistons leaking oil & would gost @ £700+++ to fix. Another said replacing engine would be better. Were could I get an engine as its a US spec & UK stoped having ST's in late 80's, would a GT engine do? Any answers/solutions or other sugestions please as ive no idea!!

Being honest a bit of blue smoke @ 147K miles when the engine is cold would not bother me unless it was using more than a litre every thousand miles. I would suggest being very gentle with the throttle until the car heats up fully, regular oil changes (every 6K miles or every 9 months) with a relatively thick oil (ie not fully synthetic) parhaps a 15 w 40 semi synthetic.

I would not consider an engine change or getting valve seals/rings or whatever else was suggested done. However the oil level should be monitored and topped up as necessary twice a week to minmise risk if running it on low oil.
