Just got a quote from my local gargage, My GT4 needs new front and back disks and pads £430!! Also it started leeking radiator fluid everywhere and started over heating when driving back from the garage, I had to pull over 6 times to let it cool down, I dont think there a problem with the engine, Just low on rad fluid. Do you think its worth putting in the £430 for new breaks, £480 for new clutch and getting the rad fixed, Or should i just sell it cheap and get another 4???

Disks aint cheap as i found out on my old ST205. Apparently the front and rears on the 205 are the same size.. i got a quote for about £140 for the pair from brakes4u on the net. Give them a ring and see what they can do.

because of the age of these cars now i dont think your going to find a 4 that is absoloutely perfect and needs nothing doing ing to it. but having said that if you pay a little more for one you might get one thats been looked after, but its swings and roundabouts really, but buying cheap usually spells problems.

also as your finding parts are not cheap either and if you have to take the car to a garage the price escalates.

personally i would get someone to have a thorough look over it from top to bottom before i decided to spend money on it, as things like suspension ect.. can run into hundreds of pounds.

I've had my Carlos Sainz for 9 years and in that time It's done hardly any miles, (still less than 60k on the clock)having said that I've had to replace the rear discs 3 times due to corrosion/lack of use along with the handbrake cables and handbrake shoes on the last occasion. You'd be surprised how relatively cheap some of the parts are. I'm assuming the £430 included fitting? all in all I would think thats not too far away for front & rear as some Toyota dealers want nearly £80 per disc. Try Fensport for all the parts you need, you might save a bit on parts at least.

Whatever you do don't skimp on brake pads get the best ones you can afford, some of these "factor companies" supply inferior pads to the garages without telling the customer, I've had experience of this, very frightening it was, overheated pads and no brakes during heavy use.

My problem, if it is a problem is my car cost me £14k 9 years ago, it wasn't cheap but it was a good one with full service history, the value I put my car at is far higher than any money that anyone is likely to offer me therefore I tend to keep throwing money at it on the very rare occasions it needs anything, mainly due to the fact that its such a great car to own, drive and still turns heads.

I'm sure other cars out there are not as good as mine and now that they are well within reach of most peoples budgets it difficult to see whether you are getting a good car or one that has been neglected.

good luck with whatever you decide.

Steve
