how on earth do they come out? i know theres a screw in the top, but is it just a battle after that or am i missing something?

you have to un screw them and then wiggle them becuz theres a steel bar holding it in and it will have rusted, best thing to do before you put them back is to grease them :)

Indeed. Take the screw out and just wiggle and pull.
