Hey guys i was wondering if you could shed some light on to a problem i have with a 2nd hand toyota avensis aura 1.6 'oo i got.

1. when i turn there is a screeching noise especially when i get closer to full lock it sounds like screeching brakes but am not sure. is this a problem i need to address straight away ?

2. when i 1st start the car regardless of outside temperature the car revs to 1500 rpm. then slowly comes down to around 800 rpm i guess. but while the engine is running it is constantly dropping 50 or so rpm ....it does not seem to have an effect on the proformance but is more annoying than anything else. any suggestions to what this might be and/or a sloution?

Thanks Martin

The screeching you hear is the power steering. It is normal for the noise to increase when you reach full lock. However it is possible that the power steering belt is a little slack and is slipping. A simple fix - a couple of spanners. Fully explained in the Haynes Manual.

When cold the Avensis will tick over at higher rpm than other cars. Again this is absolutely normal. Once warm the tick over on mine is rock steady. BUT only with the Air Con off. If it is on the revs seem to fluctuate in the same way you describe. Again this is normal and is regularly reported on the forum.
