Hello everyone,

It is great to know that so many people are so passionate and love their Rav 4's so much. Certainly since I bought my XT4 D4D in February it has grown on me more and more everyday. Just love it to bits now. :P

I've had a lot of fun reading through past threads and picked up a lot of really useful information.

About a week ago filled up with Shell diesel extra after reading about people experiences with different types of fuel and certainly my car is running a lot smoother now than it did on supermarket diesel. Using supermarket fuel was a bad habit I picked up with my last car, an X3, that had a serious drinking habit :crybaby: so fuel cost was the number one priority back then.

It certainly is nice to be doing nearly twice the mpg in my D4D and with the bonus ball of nearly half the road tax! Hopefully if I keep using the Shell diesel this will also increase my mpg by a couple of points. My gut feeling so far is that it will. I'll keep you posted after I've run a few tank full through it and done some calcs.

I was also interested by the tread a few days ago from the person who had test drove an XTR D4D and found the gearchange ackward and the ride harsh. It made me chuckle because when I test drove my XT4, I was changing gears like a muppet  but I put this down to over two lazy years behind the wheel of an auto. Now that my left leg and left arm are working harmonously together again I find the Toyota gearbox as sweet as a nut and a delight to use.

The harsh ride on the XTR I can maybe put down to the run flat tyres with there very stiff sidewalls (for use when the tyre has deflated), I know a lot of BMW and Mini owners found the ride hard because of the run flat tyres. Definitely don't give up on the D4D, it is a great car with a great engine, can I suggest you test drive a XT3/XT4/XT5 and then see how you feel because I think the ride / handling set up on my XT4 is spot on.

I have also enjoyed all the wonderful photos you have posted over the last few days. When (if) the sunshines again I will try to find some time to take a couple pictures of my RAV 4.3

Happy driving :P

Welcome to the forum Fujisan. You suggest that the alleged poor ride on the XT-R could be down to the run flat tyres. You have now hit on my favourite territory. The RAv4-3 XT-R does not have run flat tyres. It does not carry a spare. It does carry a puncture repair kit and a small air compressor.I wonder how this has affected sale because mine is the only one I have seen on the road since I bought it in January.

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome

Sorry Jock1, I assumed the XTR was running the same type of tyres as the T180, which in the RAV 4 brochure I have in front of me, is fitted with run flat tyres. I stand corrected.

By the way, was very tempted by the T180, but my head and my bank manager talked me out of it.

Happy driving :P

I have seen a few without the wheel (XTR's) so I think people are accepting them. Did you get rigged up with a spare wheel?

I had the occasion to remove tha storage tray under the boot and I am pretty sure there is enough room to store a spare under there if you want to get it out of the way.

Cheers

Thanks Anchorman. You are worth your weight in gold to this site.Yes I did buy a spare with my XT-R.I wanted the fully opening door bur could not run to the 180.If I am going on a long journey I carry the spare but must admit it's a pain, and there is always the thought that in a shunt you could end up wearing it! By removing the storage tray I assume you mean the one under the carpet. Thanks again I will investigate.

Yes thats the one. That gadget box is huge. You can get an idea by lying under the car and looking from under the bumper. I think you could still place items around the wheel (more than in the typical wheel well).

You can see how to take it out by looking at the instructions for fitting reversing sensors on the publications website.

Good luck
