Irritating Sounds And Pulling

Hi everyone

This is my first post and also my first ever toyota

I have three questions/queries that i hope someone could help me with.

Firstly when I am driving and press the brakes the car will either pull to the left or pull to the right. Also you can hear a clicking noise from the front when you are going slow. Could the clicking be the calipers? and could that be the cause of this problem? I have had it looked at but no problems have been found apart from the disc's at the front will need replacing but not straight away. Could someone please tell me what this could be please.

Secondly when the windows are closed and the radio switched off a rattling/knocking noise can bee heard. It sounds like it is coming from the back but I can not be sure.

Lastly who is Mr T that everyone seems to be mentioning?

Thanking you all in advance and look forward to reading your replies

Sid

Hi Sid

Do you pull to the left OR right? Normally pulls one way not both??

The clicking noise - are you driving straight or turning a bend? Does it stop when you apply the brakes?

The rattling noise coming from the rear - is it linked to road conditions?

Mr T? Why he's the Toyota Dealer!!

the clicking noise from the front could be the anti-squeal shims which the brake pads slide on these shims can go soft allowing the pad itsself to rattle around in the carrier creating a clicking sound

and the noise from the back could be rear arm failure the avensis suffers from that are any of your rear wheels looking out of alighnment?

The rattling, is this a hatch back|? If so, lift the tailgate, on boths sides of the car you will see two rubber pieces sticking out, they measure about an inch by two incles. Put some draught excluder on the top of each one, several strips. Shut the boot and see if the rattle goes away.

Sid,

Brakes pulling inconsistently left or right. Check tyre pressures and observe road camber when it does it.

Clicking noise at low speed could be something as simple as a piece of gravel stuck in the tread. Could also be any of the following;

loose castellated shim covering hub nut - bend the split pin back further

loose squeal shim - smear of copper grease quitens this down (although some will challenge copper on steel but the shims are plastic coated and the pads are disposable.

loose brake pads - edges corroded or the spring steel retainers need replacing

broken clip on wheel trim or loose wheel centre on alloys

beginnings of a worn outer CV joint

Regarding the noise in the boot - pump up the spare tyre and then retighten the retaining bolt holding it to the boot floor. did the trick for me and took 2 minutes.

it will sometimes pull to the left and sometimes pull to the right this is only when i am driving 20mph + and i apply the brakes to slow down.

the clicking only happens when i press the brakes and then release them a bit like when you click a pen and this only happens when i am going straight

Hi Chris,

Thank you very much for your draught excluder answer to the rear rattle problem. I have been driven crazy by this rattle for nearly 8 months, I could not find it, friends could not find it and my local (non T) garage could not find it. Thanks to you I can now drive in silence. I am very surprised that it is not possible to adjust the rear lock to eliminate this noise in a professional manner instead of using draught excluder.
