fri 22/06: car, 2005 avensis t3x 2.2 d-4d hatchback, in for 20k service informed that front tyres, dunlop sp3000 205/55/r16 v need replacing, only done 15k/miles  on way home 8 mile call into local tyre dealer and have 2 Pirelli p6000 fitted same size, wheels balanced and tracking done. On the way home, 2 mile, car was driving straighter than it ever was but i noticed 'VSC' & 'TC off' lights on. Pressed TC switch nothing happened got home parked, switched off engine, restarted no warning lights shown seemed ok.

sat 23/06 started car everything ok drove down the road at about 22miles/hr 'VSC' & 'TC off' lights come on again, pressed TC switch nothing happened. Stopped turned engine off then back on again everything ok drove down the road at about 22miles/hr 'VSC' & 'TC off' lights come on again phoned toyota, no service dept until monday, drove to tyre dealer who had a good look but could'ent find anything wrong.

question?

1. is this something to do with having a service and something not having been reset

2. is it the tyres, Pirelli p6000 are a common tyre and, on some web sites, a recommended alternative to dunlop for the avensis

I am in no way an expert, but it sounds like it could possible be a faulty sensor or loose wire/bad connection to a sensor somewhere, causing the light to come on. I myself am a tyre fitter and have been for the last 20 years or so.. changing from Dunlop to Pirelli shouldn't make any difference to the VSC/TC systems (to my knoledge anyway), and a tyre fitter won't need to touch anything to do with any sensors when removing the wheels.

I think these sensors are connect to the hub/wheel assembly somehow, and work side by side with the *speed sensor, the only reason I can think of that would relate it to a change of tyre would be down to the rolling radius being wrong.. which would mean the wrong size of tyre has been fitted on one side, but normally even this wouldn't throw a fault light unless it is on a 4x4 in 4WD mode. Check for loose connections or broken wires around the hub and brake area behind the hub assembly.. also look for any corrosion which could be affecting the sensors... other than that it is a trip to your local mechanic in the morning.

*a lot of the systems are linked together in ways that can throw a fault light anywhere on the dash... I got this info direct from TTE after having problems with my TTE Corolla, I had a faulty component that caused the speedo to go to 0mph and the power steering light came on, turned out to be a faulty EU Emissions Box and nothing to do with the speed sensor or power steering... your problem could be something similar that has nothing to do with the VSC or TC

thanks for the assistance

went to toyota dealer hodgson, gateshead who carried out a 'hand' test informed me that the steering wheel was not horizontal and must not have been locked horizontal when tracking adjusted. told me it was'ent their problem and to go back to the the tyre dealer to get it realigned and then go back to them to 'reset' the switch and i would be charged min 1 hr @ £65+vat. i told him i would'ent be back, ever; ive had cars off hodgson for over 25 years! tyre dealer rechecked and adjusted the tracking and no lights are coming on seems ok now
