Power Steering

Now I know hydraulic power steering makes a hissing noise when its on full lock, but my t-sport seems to be making a loud hissing noise (like letting off steam) in other circumstances - e.g. when going round a roundabout whilst accelerating. It's a much louder hiss than when it's on lock. It doesn't do it whilst turning the wheel when stationery, or when driving slowly whilst turning the wheel. It seems to be when accellerating slightly whilst turning the wheel. It disappears as soon as you straighten up. Any ideas?

Have you checked the fluid level?

Are you sure it is PS and not the outlet pipe from the turbo leaking?

Just some ideas.

Good luck

Turbo? Wish I had one!!! I'm not sure if it's the power steering now. Difficult noise to diagnose. Going to pay Toyota a visit.

On the P2 t-sport the PS reservoir isn't transparent like on other cars. It looks metal with a black cap. Do you just have to pull the cap off and peer in??

The manual is no help at all as all it refers to is electric PS which all P2s come with, except the t-sport which uses a good old hydraulic system. Any advice on checking the level would be appreciated.

Well it turned out to be nothing to do with the power steering. The noise was in fact a stone that had lodged itself between the back of nearside brake disc and disc guard. Seems like a pretty poor design on Toyota's part. Can't see the point of these guards anyway.... I'm sure no car I've owned in the past has had them on.

Most cars with disc brakes have these.......................I had a similar problem on a Metro that I owned many, many years ago so the design is not new.

The guards are supposed to prevent stones from getting in the brake mechanism but occasionally cause the problems you described.
