Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone outhere can assist with a problem that I have.

I have purchased a used Avensis a few weeks ago to replace my MK1 "P" Reg Mondeo TD, I had bought from a private seller from the Auto-trader magazine, the car was just short of £2k and thought it was a great bargain, it was emmiting a little Blue smoke from exhaust when started but I did'nt think much about it as engine was cold when it was started. I had set my heart on purchasing the vehicle and thought that maybe it needed a service and a little TLC. I had parted with my hard earned cash and got my dream car for my job which involves a lot of motorway miles (22,000 annual mileage). I has noticed when driving my Mondeo home with my Dad in the Avensis that he was just a speck in the mirror when we had to drive up any hills on the journey home. Long story short and a few hundred miles later the engine started knocking really badly and a serious loss of power, it was suggested to me that one of the pistons had broken and the compression was forcing oil out of the filler cap. I was told by a mechanic that the days of stripping the engine and re-boring the block and replacing piston/rings were over and it was suggested that I source a used D4-D engine and get a mechanic to swap the engine for a used one from a breakers.

I had found one which cost £560 inc Vat (61,000) miles and had it delivered to a local garage who were happy to swap them. The garage had quoted £300 plus vat. I have just got it back and I am nearly a grand out of pocket. It has dawned on me today upon inspection of the"replacement engine" that it looks like my old engine is still in place and I suspect that the garage has just swapped a component or 2 which is not what I paid for!.

How can I prove that my old engine is still in the vehicle as I think that I should be entiltled to a chunk of my cash back as I suspect that the garage have not done what was asked of them any I have been ripped off yet again after anticipating a newer engine with a lot less miles would be fitted.

I wonder if there is a ID/serial number on the engine which I could identify and cross reference with Toyota to see if it the original engine is still under the bonnet which would provide evidence that would help me when I challenge the mechanics.

I have noticed that the car struggles to climb hills and loses speed on them and I find it hard to go any faster than 80MPH in 4th or 5th gear on a flat road and the Turbo seems to work ok, as I had mentioned at the start I was replacing my faithful Mondeo which has done 123,000 miles and seems like a sports car compared to the Avensis.

If the character of the D4-D engine is sluggish then do I need to fork out more money to get a chip for the engine to boost it from 110bhp to 134bhp.

Avensis D4-D 2.0 16v twin-cam (2000) vs Mondeo 1.8 8v single OHC (1996). The Mondeo wins outright in the performance area.

Any advice?

yes the engine will have a serial number, check either the owners manual or at a dealers for its location.

the original engine number will be on your logbook as well.

the 2.0 D4-D is quite powerful so it defiantly sounds like you have issues.

worth noting that the injectors on the D4-D are programmed into the ecu so if you change the injectors/ engine the will need resetting.

as far as i know its a job for the dealers though
