Gen 7 Celica Engine Oil

Hi,

I have a Gen 7 Celica - 140 bhp, 2001, 57K. Unfortuently i didn't get a manual with it.

I am just wondering which grade Engine oil i am to add to it. I have been looking around the net (and this Forum) and basically seems to be Semi synthetic 5W-30 according to some websites e.g castol. I rang around a couple of toyota dealers in Dublin, where i live and they suggested to use Semi synthetic 10W-40, one suggested Fully Synthetic 10W-40.

I am going to fully replace the oil and Filter.

Any suggestions which oil to add?

What does the toyota manual say?

Thanks,

Ed.

P.s. i'm new to this!!

Hi Ed and welcome to the club

There is some excellent information regarding oils HERE which will help.

Les

Cheers, Les.

Had a read of that info.

thinking of just going for the semi synthetic option 10w-40, Castrol magnetic or something along that line. The car is totally standard. 80% of my driving is motorway crusing at 75mph and i dont trash it too much (mabye the odd blast down a backroad). Only thing I heard is that 5w-30 gives you better fuel economy (i do about 350 miles a week) but not sure if using 10W-40 would make much of a differance.

Anyone got any info to add?

Ed

Any fully synthetic oil will exceed the manufacturers advice, I would use a fully synthetic oil and change it every 6/8000 miles. Do keep an eye on your oil level frequently though as the 140bhp Celica Gen 7 are known to lose a bit sometimes, resulting in big problems if not topped up.

Yep i've heard that problem before, I check the oil every week so i dont have to get a new engine! seems to be a common enough problem though which aint good. Was talking to a toyota dealer and he said the same and not to trust the oil warning light as it only measures oil pressure so by the time the light comes on the damage may already be done. Pity their isnt a proper oil level indicator like i had on my old peugeot 206 XSI, came on every time you started the car to tell you how much it had left in the sump.
