Front Shock Absorber Leakage

Just had my 04 30 k service done at local toyota dealer only cost 112 quid :yahoo:

But have been hearding a pounding noise coming from the front when hitting a bump in the road. Dealer confirms that i have a front Shock Absorber leaking. They have quoted 168 quid to do the job, it seems reasonably priced, but wondered will i damage the car any further if i dont get repaired very soon (it seems the leak only started last week). :crybaby:

Does the quote seem reasonably priced

and

will i do any damage if i leave it till payday at the end of next month

Please help

If the quote is for replacing both front shocks then it is very reasonable indeed (assuming they use OE shocks or the Monroes). If it is just to replace one shock then don't bother. You need to replace them both.

The banging noise is more than likely the bump stops. This is normal when your shocks are damaged as they are there to absorb the impact and thus reduce the likelyhood of damage to the mounts.

With regards leaving it until payday, I would be surprised if you damaged the car by waiting a couple of weeks BUT, drive easy. Your breaks and handling will be below par with a damaged shock (especially if you are still on standard springs). Just drive like a vicar until payday, I've been told it's also good for the soul!

Hope this helps.

Are shocks not warranty items? Or are you out of warranty now?

I'd second the advice to go very easy (if at all) on faulty shocks. That corner of the car is going to bounce around badly until they're replaced.

£130 a pair fitted (if that's the case) sounds very reasonable, but they're like tyres in that you can buy them pretty much any place so that tends to help keep prices down.
