Hi. Welcome saddler.

Perhaps I'm biased but my impressions are that the reliability of a Toyota, particularly one from the Starlet era, will be considerably better than the reliability of a FIAT. I've never owned a FIAT mind, but I hear lots of stories of unreliability, whereas Toyotas are well known for being reliable.

That's not a guarantee that you won't have any problems with any car of that age, just a belief that you'll have fewer with a Toyota. We have an MR2 and a Corolla on M and N plates respectively and hardly have any problems with them at all, though they're both very low mileage.

Hopefully some of the Starlet bods will be along soon to tell you what specifc things you should look out for when buying one.

Jap cars are great. I was never that interested in them until we bought the gf's Rolla. Then I started to realise that we never had problems with her car, and always had stupid things going wrong with mine, though it was an early Vectra and they were absolute rubbish.

Since then we've hardly bought anything but Toyota. Did have a Porsche briefly because I figured that surely they would be OK, but even that had one or two problems and its warranty was only for two years, so we sold that and went back to Toyota/Lexus.

The Starlet is superb too. A mate of mine sells used cars and he's always keen to get a Starlet, Paseo or a Yaris as a trade in because he knows they will sell well, and he's unlikely to have unhappy customers coming back with problems.

Anyway, good luck with your search. If you don't get any more info from the Starlet owners here, I can PM my mate's contact details as I'm sure he'd be happy to give you some advice.
