2002 Sequoia Shift lever locking

:( I've had this occur several times, now - WHen I put the the Sequoia in park, engine running, then open a door (drivers or front passenger), then try to shift into gear (D or R) the shift lever is locked in Park and will not move!

I have to shut off the vehicle, remove the key and wait for a few minutes, then start up again.... if I don't wait long enough, the shift lever is still locked, but then releases.

Anybody have this experience and know what's going on? Is this supposed to be a feature or is it a problem waiting to happen?

Have not experienced this myself but sounds like some type of safety feature to prevent the gear being engaged once the driver has exited the vehicle.....

Would imagine there must be some button somewhere to release the vehicle/
