was there a mk1 MR2 on carbs? one rolled past me today and sounded like it had a carb rasp when the fella lifted.

n.b. i am in chicago at the moment, so does that change anything??

there are quite a few mk1's that have the 20 valve 4age engine as an aftermarket engine. Those engines are fairly common and cheap in the states so most probably one of those.
