hi all.

Im currently driving a vauxhall tigra and in the process of selling her. I really like the look of the Rav4 2.0GX and wondered what to look for before i buy. Is there any common faults or niggles i should be aware of.

wish i had taken time to do this before purchasing my tigra had nothing but problems with her.

thanks

hi, well you can search a bit around in this forum to find your answer.

you talk about a 2.0 GX... but you don't talk about the year.

as you can see in my profile and signature i own 2 of those rav4's. i have a 2001 gx auto, bought it from the guildford toyota dealer via the internet without seeing it or a test drive. the only problem i had after some months was a sensor what was replaced by warranty. it's the best car i ever owned in my years of motoring since 1981.

Hi Corrine

Welcome to the club.

To be honest there are no real skeletons in the closet with these things. They are in a different league to a Vauxhall in terms of build quality and reliability. There is a post on the second page called "petrol or diesel" that might be worth flicking through.

Other than that try to find one that hasn't been in an accident, has dry carpets and some evidence of being serviced properly, give it a good test drive and don't expect it to feel like that skateboard you own.

If you find one you like and have some specific issues there are lots of knowledgeable people on this forum that are able to answer your questions.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Corrine,

Hi and welcome to TOC. There are plenty of threads on here from potential Rav owners asking

the same question as you if you do a search. From my own point of view, my wife reckons I have

owned over 30 cars ( I think its actually more) a lot of different makes and models, including

Vauxhalls. I can honestly say the Rav is the best I've had, no regrets what so ever. In your case,

if you have decided a 4X4 is what you want go for the Rav, stay well clear of Land Rover Freelanders

( I have had 2 of them in the past).

Good luck

Dave.

You'll have Clan Aberdeen down to see you if you badmouth a Freelander.

Steve was very fond of his. However, I think he might ecourage Corrine to go for a RAV on this occasion!

Yes, I was very fond of my Freelander - 4.1/2 years and over 80,000 miles without letting me down. I gave it to one of my daughters last year and it continues to give sterling service. Her husband is in the process, this weekend, of putting in rear seats and windows; it was a "Commercial" which meant it had been taken off the main production line and finished at LR's Special Vehicles Division (where they build the special models for the Queen, SAS, etc) - having now seen how far the commercial customisation went, I'm not surprised the Commercial is reported as more reliable than the "normal" models.

It was more of a workhorse than the Rav4 is and I treated it rougher than I expect I'll treat my Rav4. However, my needs have changed and I'm delighted with what I have now; no real off-road need - the Rav4 is an excellent soft-roader. Unless you need to regularly drive across fields, or along farm and forest tracks (or go onto construction sites), the Rav4 is the one to go for in my opinion.

Hi Corrine,

I'm no expert on RAV's but I do know I love my RAV 4.3 (the lastest Mk 3 version, 2006 onwards).

It does everything so well, handles well, rides well, great family car, good mpg, good motorway cruiser, great town car and most of all, no trouble at all.

I still see loads of RAV 4.1 and 4.2 models on the road that look as good as the day they came off the production line. I don't know if it is something about the RAV and their owners looking after them and caring for them or an inbuilt toughness but I have yet to see a shabby RAV 4, of any age!

I think you would be very unlucky to find a rogue RAV 4, that will cause you trouble. After all that it why they keep their value so well.

Good luck and happy driving :)

Corrine,

I'd mirror what the other guys have mentioned.

I've had three Rav's as my last three cars (having owned all of the usual suspects beforehand).

I can say without hesitation that they are unbelievably reliable. :driving:

Like any car though, there will be those that have been cared for  and others that haven't :crutchy:

Just make sure you pick a good 'un in the first place and I'm sure you'll have no problems. :) :)
