Mpg Before And After Service

W/2000 1.0 vvti

I bought the car with about 45,000 miles on. It had a service stamp (not Toyota) at 41000. According to the gizmo I was getting about 47 MPG, which for the kind of driving I was doing seemed about right. This was measured over about 12 tanks full and after doing the sums each time the gizmo showed as accurate to within about .1 MPG each time. After I put about 4500 miles on, I got round to giving the car a quick service. The air filter was absolutely minging and I doubt that the plugs were only 5000 miles old. The central electrodes were worn down diagonaly to little points, the 'J' bar that curls under the central electrode were incredibly thin and distorted like fish hooks. Consequently the gap was probably around 2.4-2.5mm. Notwithstanding this, the car started and ran absolutely fine. Anyway, once the new parts were in, I looked forward to bit of an improvement on MPG. Approaching the end of my first tank since the service I seem to have gained about 0.8-1 mpg. I was kind of hoping for more although maybe it's more a case of how well the car was doing with the worn out plugs and the bogging air filter.

Lesson learnt about servicing a second hand car as soon as I buy it.

Think of it as a positive, you've done 4500 miles while only missing out on 1 mpg

I worked out my consumption to be 46 mpg, mainly driving on urban roads at no more than 35 mph.

Normally I put in 20 litres, & this lasts me at least 200 miles, which is around 2 weeks worth of round trips to work & a few other drives out.

Update

Over the last few weeks since I did the service, the mpg is slowly improving week by week. having filled up 3-4 times it goes up about 2mpg each time and is now returning 53-54. Is it some function of the ECU gradually adapting to the new plugs and filter?

how do you get over 50 mpg!!!

i have a 1.0 vvti as well and the best i have ever managed is 45 ish.

i have been wondering about my mpg as well, as i said i used to get about 45 ish but it has gradually dropped and now the best i can get is 38. i think if i run some fuel system cleaner through her this may help. this was done at the 10000 mile service but not the 20000 or 30000 mile services, so i think that may be why the mpg started to drop. and its not like she had dirty plugs or filters or anything cos the 30000 mile service was only last monday.

I'm not exactly driving miss daisy, but I don't thrash the car. I've never used any system additives or cleaners. I just changed the plugs and air filter and the mpg has started creeping up. Obviously my daily commute and yours will be different. However, like I said on the first post it was about 47, but after the DIY service is slowly improving. Now 53ish.

Oh and i'm 47 years old, maybe that's it.
