Air Conditioning Suddenly Stopped Working

Hi can anyone offer any advice, I have a 97 corolla and the air conditioning has stopped working. I would have put it down to the fact that my corolla is now 10yrs old and that the unit needs regassing but recently I removed the facia where the air con switch is to enable me to fit a new stereo. I was just wondering if I might have fused something ? the light on the air con switch does come on when I press it but its just dead, I would have thought that if the unit needed reconditioning I would have noticed it gradually deteriorate in performance but on the contrary it worked just fine until recently and im sure it has somethign to do with my stereo fitting. Im a little confused as to whether there is a fuse for the air con and if so where it is.

the light for the air con switch wil come on regardless of whether the air con works or not (i know this as i have removed all the air con components from the engine bay and the switch in the cabin will still operate as normal!). Also if there is anything up with you system that isn't to do with a recharge i now have a spare air con compressor (hfc134a type gas) lying around, fully functional when removed i just have no need for air con. As to where the fuse is i beleive its not to far from the relay box in the engine bay  hopw this helps.

best thing to do is to run the engine, and watch the air con compressor while a mate turns the switch on, you will see the magnetic clutch cut in and start turning, if this doesnt happen then you may have a wiring fault, if it does happen then its probably wants a recharge or may have leak, either way most garages can fill it with dye as they charge the system so you might as well get it charged

Is the problem with the Air Con is that there is no cold air coming through the vents? Is there plenty of cool air coming through the vents when the fan heater is used without air con? If there's no air coming throught the vents you might want to check the filter.
