Suggest you take car and key to a Toyota dealer who will do the job for you.

Hi guys,

I went today morning to Mr T and they tryed program my other key fob for my Avensis(2003,2 litre VVTi) and they told me that it is impossible.ECU does not want program it.They said whether the ECU is a problem or key ,they can't precise untill I will order a new key(190 pounds) and they will try again.Than they will tell where is a fault(new Ecu about 800 pounds).I did buy second hand key on ebay(for my luck cost me only 8 pound).

Any advise how to check whether it is ecu or key?

Thanks

Woj

A locksmith once informed me that the ECU has a limit to the number of keys which can be registered to it. Perhaps this 'limit' has already been reached.

AFAIK there is a procedure to 'de-register' keys - Thus it should be possible to clear the current keys linked to it and effectively start re-registering from afresh.

I know that Toyotas need a 'master' key in the ignition barrel to begin the transponder cloning procedure. This means that the clearing of the ECU memory must apply to every key bar the one in the ignition lock.

A similar protocol would apply for the programming of the remote alarm/locking which is carried out using a different routine.

Good luck

Hey,

So what will happen if I will de-register all keys and I will not be able program again. Uhh, it will be expensive test. Is de-register means that I will only disable communication between key and ECU(master key still has program inside?)Do the Toyota does not know about it?.

Any advices.

Hi there i have just bought a Avensis T4 on a 53 plate about a month ago came only with 1 key went Mr Toyota dealship where they ordered me a new key and programed it for £120 and gave my car a safety check as well. key prices are a bit steep but its better than having to fork out for the locks and ECU to be changed for around £1500 if you lose your only key.

Been thinking about your problem.

Even if your ECU isn't able to accept new keys there is a simple way around this.

The latest Transponder keys can now be Cloned. That is the new key is identical to the original. The ECU would therefore not be able to distinguish between the two.

The device for doing this was introduced last Summer. See:

The keys cost around £50 and have an internal Battery which lasts a number of years. I rang Aldridge (wholesalers) to find a locksmith who had bought one of these local to me. Should solve your problem.

Obviously the new Key will only start the car. The remote locking etc would rely on your eBay key which is programmed with a totally different procedure.
