Brake Caliper Dilemma With Mr T

Hi all,

I spent some time last weekend trying to replace the front break pads on my beloved t-sport. Easy job i thought and in theory it is.

My problem is that the first 2 holding bolts you remove (the ones that screw into the pins at the top and bottom of the caliper) were siezed on and rusted like hell. Penetrating spray or not the buggers werent moving and long story short i managed to snap them......BOTH! DOH!

Went to Mr T thinking this was a relativley easy to come by replacement...... They had to order them (2 day delivery - ok fair enough) and are now trying to charge me £55 - were talking 4 pins and 2 bolts here.

CAN THIS BE RIGHT! - I knew the dealers were expensive but hell....

Whats your thoughts guys?????? :ffs:

You would be better off going to a Breakers to get the bits - would be a lot cheaper provided the bits

came off a CTS without a front end smash as they are a safety related item.

A little smear of Copper-slip on the bolt shaft and thread will prevent this occuring again.

I have just done the brakes on mine front and rear, and had to free off the siezed bleed nipples on mine -

they have been Copper-slipped now so no probs in the future.

I had to buy 2 of the bolts from Mr T as I lost one when fitting new Discs and pads but I only paid £1.72 for two so I think Mr T is trying to rip you off big style!

I had this same problem!

I had a seized pin in the slider, nothing would budge it and so I snapped a bolt in the pin! Not a good thing to do! Had to get replacement pins anyway not necessarily bolts too :censor:

Anyway to cut a long story short, Got in touch with a Mr T who charged me about £2 inc vat per bolt! A little high I know! The Pins that fit in the slider are a little more expensive! The Caliper Pin Kit is around £50 ish ex vat! so you prices is probably right! In the kit you'll get grease lube, 4 new pins, 4 new rubber boots! I changed all my boots and pins and topped up the grease just to be on the safe side! Replacing front discs and pads should have taken 2 hours max! Took me 2 days this way!!! :censor:

All done! But maybe worth pointing out this page again to people who may experience this problem! Read the lower posts! May give people an idea on how to release a jammed pin!

few seconds with a blowtorch is usually all thats required. I always grease up my brake pins once a year as they always tend to seize up if left un touched for ages.

Hi Folks, "A FEW SECONDS WITH THE BLOWTORCH" before you all go out and hit the gas, just try warming the brakes up through heavy use and then try taking them apart, that heat should do the job, understand the gas but not what we should be doing.

Cheers

Hi again guys,

Finally sorted but hell.....what a nightmare.

Ordered the PIN kit and 2x bolts to replace the knackered ones from mr T ----- £58 + VAT

A little shocked with the price but i needed them....2 day delivery!!!!

When I went to pick up the kit 2 days later the chimp behind the counter had ordered the wrong bolts DOH!

(At the time he seemed to know what he was talking about so didnt really question him)

Had to place another order for the correct bolts....1 Day delivery

Got a phone call the next day literally 20 minutes before i went to pick them up and what did i get....

"sorry sir, we have only got one of the bolts you needs - looks like a packing error"!!!

Anyways.....i'll stop goin on - reordered another bolt for the following day. Cant believe it took nearly a week to get the parts - What kind of chimps do they have working there???

Anyways - its all sorted now breaks are fine and i'm back with my baby on the roads again.

As rolley said - what should have taken 2 hours took me a WEEK!!! ah!!!! :crybaby:

BY THE WAY IF ANYONE WANTS THE PRODUCT CODES FOR THE PIN AND BOLTS SO THEY DONT GO THROUGH WHAT I DID THEY ARE:

PIN KIT (includes 4 pins (2 of each type) grease and runner bungs) - Part Number: T04952-02230 Price: £55.58

BOLT (for the pins) Part Number: T90080-10190 Price: £1.46 each
