Squeeky Wheels

Hi

I'm a bit new to all this

I just wanted to ask a quick question about my beloved 55 plate yaris

My passenger side front wheel has developed a amazingly loud squeek in the past few weeks

It only squeeks when coasting at lights or at very low speeds & tends to disappear once you put your foot down - it doesn't squeek when you actually apply the brakes

I took it to the garage and they have said that there is a problem with the corrosion on the brakes and they will fix this under warranty they also said that I needed new brake pads and that they should do them at the same time which I need to pay for

But when i looked up the fault - apparently its due to low usage of the brakes

so is it reasonable to replace the brake pads at only 12500miles? I'm not usually that heavy on the brakes, although I do a commute across town everyday.

Not sure about this as this is my first car - just wanted to ask if it sounded right

Thanks

Welcome to TOC.

Pads should last way longer than 12,500 miles. 30K at least I'd say, and then I'd be disappointed if they didn't do more than that.

Perhaps the disk corrosion has caused the pads to prematurely wear - in which case you would expect the pads to be covered under warranty, but I think they're not. You're not the first person to have this issue though, and I think it's fairly usual for the garage to say that the warranty doesn't cover the pads. Same would apply if a failure of another component caused your tyres to wear prematurely - fixing the problem is a warranty issue, but replacing the consumables affected by the problem tends not to be.

You may have no choice but to accept that, situation, but I'd not be happy about it.

Yea, this does seem to be the case, unfortunately. I was told that my disc are warped on my year 2 service and that they are covered but i need new pads too but i need to pay for them. I can understand that the pads are a consumable but it should depend of the situation in my opinion. If the pads are nearly worn within 3 years then obviously the customer needs to pay but if they need replacing as a direct result of a fault elsewhere, ie poor workmanship or dodgey parts, then they should be covered by the warrenty and toyota should take the bill with both hands.

I decided not to get the work done straight away and use the pads a little more. Then take it in about 2 months before my warrantly has expired.

For the record, I get this problem aswell, but my passenger side wheel mainly squeeks when I;m turning a corner. If it is down to low usage of the brakes that would make sense as I was advised in January by toyota that my pads will last another 1000 miles, which i usually do in a month, and they are still going strong!

I've kinda lived with it tho, and wait till i get my brakes replaced and if its still there look into it more...

i have the same problem. my advice is to use that spray WD-40 into the hinges or screws around that area, i did it and it went away for a few weeks.

thanks everybody - just wanted to sound it out with others

thought it probably would just be one of those things that life chucks at you

it has got so loud I can't just ignore it but hopefully the garage will sort it out when it goes in, in a couple of weeks.....just a little annoyed as its the 3rd minor fault to be fixed under warranty and the schlepping back and forth from the garage is really inconvenient as its in the middle of nowhere!

but still love my car so i'll have to live with it i suppose

thanks again

I had this problem on my first Yaris & the Toyota dealer said the front off side brake disc was binding, they cleaned it and adjusted it (I think) and it was fine after.

The Yaris Blue we have has it very intermittantly too :S
