Live Feed/powering A Sub

Hi to all of you on here from a new member.

I dont own a Rav but my GF is now on her second. Very impressed with the D4D engine :)

Anyway hoping someone will know or will have done this before. I have just upgraded the factory head unit and Speakers for a nice Sony and JBL fronts and have managed to squeeze a Alpine sub under the front passenger seat !

The sub talks about powering itself from the Battery which while may be a nice idea, i dont want to drill/poke any rubbers through on this new motor.

Can anyone recomend where I can take a live feed from of suficient power capability (prob up to 12A) to power the unit ? I was thinking of using one of the unused fuses on the fuse box (seat heaters etc) but havnt a clue where and what colours the wires will be ?

Help please !

Hi ids

You've not said anywhere which model RAV you have so take great care in putting any excessive loads on a 4.3 as they have duplex wiring and a CAN system that might get damaged.

In any case I would suggest that you take your feed from the Battery and put an in line fuse close to the terminal.

You can get very clear and simple instructions from the Toyota Publications website. I looked at the ones for the 12S wiring for towbars that shows you how to run the feed through the bulkhead. This link might work;

This is for a 4.2

But if not let me know and I will tell you how to get at the publications website.

Hi thanks for the advice ! Her Rav is a late 2004 so I'm guessing this is an 4.2 ???

I had found the toyota publications site but never thought of that one. From the diagram on p21 it shows a grommet near to the throttle which ill investigate once this blaste rain stops!

It seems a bit old school connecting direct to the Battery IMHO when there are perfectly good feeds into the fusen boxen however if thats what folks advise then fine. I was looking at the sub it has a 12A fuse - I was thinking of splicing into the secondary accessories connector (you know ciggy lighter jobbie near handbrake) as thats rated for acc's up to 15A apparently.

Does anyone have a decent wiring diagram showing all of the possible connections as I say the heated seats fuse/connection seems a good bet - if only I knew the colours of the wires......

Thanks

You can pick up the colour or the wire by popping the accessory plug out but beware that a speaker that is rated at 12A may peak much higher. It means that hte performance of the speaker will be compromised and that you may cook some wires.

Its up to you :thumbsup:

I'd steal a multimeter or voltmeter from yer friendly lectricshun and check out whats on when. For example my missus likes to listen to the radio when the ignition is off and I'm in paying for the petrol.... The basics will then help to decide what you want to tap off- On my 1994 model, I linked the spot lights through relays with the main take off from the Battery with fuse protection to avoid mucking about with the wiring. As was said above, if you switch on the noise machine whilst its on full volume (not that that will ever happen??) then the surge might just pop a circuit. By fitting up the kit even temporarily, you can monitor the ampage with a decent meter to help decide whether you run it from a seat heater circuit or from the Battery. Mind that underfloor heating in houses is pretty low on amps and watts used and maybe the seat heater circuitry is similar. Nothing worse than frying a wiring harness which is why I kept my lamps separate! Good luck...!

Hi

I didnt mean jump into the loom at the heated seats plug, simply meant find the fuse on the dash panel that would normally feed the heated seats, disconnect the heated seats part of the loom and then use that connection for the feed.

Unfortunaly my digial meter wont do anything over a couple of amps so I'm stuck as far as thats concerned.

Anyone know where there is an online leccy diagram for these motors ?

Thanks

It's in here. It costs you 3 euro/hour about £2.00 ish.

Your profile doesn't say which model you have.

This is the fitting instructions for the seat heater on a 4.2;

http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/aimupload...Z455X031100.pdf

The looms to the seat are provided in the kit so you won't find them lurking conveniently under the seat, you have to hook into the relay panel near the steering column and furthermore it is only a 10 amp supply. I didn't know this was the case but you could save yourself a lot of heartache by running a wire to the Battery with no risk. You can drop a relay in if you don't want it permanently fed.

This is the fitting instructions for a 4.3;

http://techdoc.toyota-europe.com/aimupload...l%20version.pdf

It seems that you pick up the loom behind the centre panel and the plugs are under the seat. However the fuse rating for both seats is 15A so presumably the wiring is only rated at 7.5A for each seat.

You're back to running a wire to the Battery. Comment on relay still applies - you can pick up a feed almost anywhere for the switching side without imposing any excessive load.
