5th Gen Gtr

HI there Owners. Ive ownened a GTR for some years now. Durung that time ive realised that there is a good deal of Authoritive info on most versions of the Celica. However, there seems to be little dedicated to the GTR. Considering that the GTR was issued to commemorate 20 years of Toyota Motoring, this matter I thought should be addressed.

The idea of this Topic is to Gather any GTR info into one place where we can all find it.

My Celica:

GTR

2 litre

Carb

Auto

Model 5th Gen 90/91

St182

2nd Gen 3S-GE

T180 Platform

A/C

ABS

CC

Elec. Seat/mirrors/Arial

5cd Kenwood (Panach Auto Birmingham)

As mentioned above. The GTR was the Toyota 20th Anniversary Editon of the 5th Gen Celica. Released in Dec 1990

Confusion on some forums seems to centre around the fact that the st182 was mostly Injection and is usually referred to as GT or 4WS/ Alltrac. There are many similarities, but the GTR was quite specific using the 2nd gen 3S-GE. There may also be injector versions of the GTR, im not sure. Hopefully we will find out. I havent located any manuals or wiring that related specifically to The GTR Autos. And am unsure as to what degree the GT wiring is relevent as they all seem to list just the Alltrac and 4WS . Any advice on this or links. Ive already been combing the net for info to offer, but even the celica best pages still lack any GTR specific.

My Celica.

Some History:

Got given my Celica as a gesture for various Household repairs id done to a friends property. The car was sitting lookin a bit and neglected. Flat front tyres. Clear laquer peeling. I Had all the brakes done (disks and Pads) And the N/S/F bearing. It whent through Mot and Love Blossemmed from that moment on. Ide never had an outo before, and id agree that this settup lacks a true sports feel. But for Cruisin, Its just the best, and drives like silk. Sticks to road like Bum fluff to a blanket and carries that Sporty but Serious vibe. As I said, the clear laquer has gone on the roof and the bonnet. The only other 5th Gen with the same symtoms was also a GTR in Australia So maybe it was a batch specific prob. Have yet to get this sorted as im usually to busy driving it. Ive seen wispers of some problems with GTs that relate to my GTR so I'll mention problems ive had. Ariel gave up. Apparently this is a common Celica prob. I saw a replacement on eBay today for £9.00. My exhaust whent on the Mid and Back sections. Youll have to get right under to check the Mid. It goes where it swings upwards just behind the passenger seat. Apparently F/N/S suspension is more prone to wear. Not sure if this is true. But I have notice there is some vibration on the Headlight that side, that does not occur on the O/S My radiator Cracked right next to the Cap. A new one cost me £75 plus £20pp from A supplier in Birmingham. Ask me if you need details. During the course of the radiator boilin over, some water got down into the gear selector switch at the engine end. This caused the panel shift position lights to go off. Then I started getting the Non-starting issues. Out of the blue. It just wouldnt turn. It seemed to clear with a tap on the Starter. Reconned the starter. Still happened. Yet seemed to go most times if I used my spare Battery.(never without one) Replaced starter. Same. Them Alternator whent.(thought it was running a bit hot)!! Replaced Alternator. Same. DOH!! Started to suspect starting probs due to relays. After some weeks!!! I managed to locate them. Strange thing was. The one that was seeming to give problems was marked EFI (Electric Fuel Injection????) Anyway, mines a Carb. So then i reall got confused. Re[laced the EFI relay with an off the shelf 12v Relay of the same switching nature. Managed to get her turning again. But no spark. I dont sus the Ignitor or Coil. As nothing has really changed beyond taking the relay out. Im wondering if there are some relevent pins withing the Auto Swith sensor, when the water got it it burnt a couple of the pins out completely. Im wondering if it now telling the ECU the wrong signal. Anyway. Ive Bowed to the services of a Auto Electrician (later this week) I will tell you more when I know more. Ive seen people talking about these starting problems in the forums. It would be interesting to ask if any of these has incurred radiator damaged at any point. The Rad expansion tank on the 5th Gen Gtr spill into the engine compartment and in extreme cases steam can condense and enter plugs. (Trust me) During the over heating, my head gasket has become over heated. So I will be doind a head strip and replace gasket. Watch this space and I will post some details when I do it. Additionally if theres anyone with advice (excluding DONT) then feel free to offer. Im No full blown Mechanic. Just A novice. Im No full Blown Specialist on Celicas. I just Love my Car.

My last Girlfriend said to me " Its either me, or that Celica. One of us has gotta go"........................................................She really shouldnt have put me in a corner like that.......I dont miss having a girlfriend.............More time for Driving,...Weheeeeeeyy!!!!!!

Im not sure of my BHP, cus the 3s-GE was around 158 but i think thats for GT and i havnt had any GTR stats, nor Automatic stats. Feel free to comment.

One of the cars that made me realise I had to have Gen 5 after I had a look at a few at Bubble meets and JAE a few years back.

Welcome, JB4GTR - good to see another East Mids Gen 5 owner on the forums.

Re the starting issues. Not sure if it's the same on the GT-R but on the GT4 there's a device that provides the spark (not really a traditional coil as such) mounted off the Battery platform, and directly beneath the front fuse/relay box. The bolt holding mine had snapped off so when I had the Battery out recently I repaired that, but another Gen5 owner recently told me that when those brackets break off they can cause problems with ignition because the earth connection can be dependant on the bracket. No idea if that will help in your situation, but worth a look.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Mate,

Firstly the starting problem- first thing I would check is the condition of the earthing of the starter, sometimes these can corrode out and cause starting problems, which seem like a sticky starter. Also check the Battery earth. Worth a try for free anyway :)

As for the info you have on your car, either your car is one serious oddball or rare model, or the info you have found isn't wholly correct.

The GT-R is basically an ST182/3, using 3S-GE engines. They were built from 1989-1993. The anniversary model will be badged up as an aniversary, these were ST183's (models with 4WS) and I think most of those limited edition ones came in a metallic green colour- I have the bonnet off one in my garage. Not sure if all anniversaries were in that colour though.

No car I have heard of uses a carb, all celicas were fuel injected for all markets from when the generation 4 model was released in 1985. Your engine you say is a rev2 3S-GE which uses multi point fuel injection, if you look (its hard to see) there will be four denso injectors and a fuel rail sat above your intake manifold. Again I may be wrong!

Power wise, GT-R's are rated at 162 BHP for JDM models, the UK ones have 158 as you say for the same year.

Hope I don't sound like a know it all because i certainly don't know that much  this is just info I've picked up over years of ownership.

Enjoy the car mate, great cars to own thats for sure

Hey JB4GTR hows it goin mate? i bought my Celica GT-R not long ago, great cars. you're right about one thing and thats is the lack of info. and the difficulty in finding info in regards to the motor.

The GT-R models are obviously JDM's so all the info. available is in japanese (if you could even find the jap manulas)! lol. i am trying really hard to get hold of some info. if i ever do get hold of anything i'll post something up.

Take it easy mate and enjoy the car

Yeah I've had my GT-R since October, and still not managed to find a manual. Although the ones I have seen are for the GTi-16 which is the same engine (3sge) and they seem to have it fairly well covered. But all this chat about auto box's is confusing espesically as my GTR is a manual (was told manual GTR's are quite rare...is this true???)

theyre not rare, its just that more GT-R's are auto's than early UK models because the japanese buy more of them than us :)

manual wise the chiltons USA is very good I've found, its the one i've used most anyway.

I have an American Haynes Manual (http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=14151&langId=-1) that I inherited from the previous owner which has been pretty useful. It's not too great when it comes to the 3S-GE engine though, the diagrams don't seem to match the revision thats's in the GT-R, the US engine lineup was differrent. I didn't know there was a UK gen 5 celica Haynes manual until now, I obviously didn't look hard enough when I got the car! Bar a few superficial exceptions and the 4ws option, the GT-R's pretty much the same car as the UK ST182. Translated JDM Celica manuals have a small amount of info on the auto box (also inherited one from previous owner)

Mine's a manual late '91 facelift non-4WS and certainly doesn't have a carb. It's a great car to drive, it just needs a small fortune to ammend the peeling laquer exterior, and a new wheel bearing (tommorow hopefully!).

Gran Turismo 4 puts the ST183 (4WS GT-R) at 165bhp if that info's any use!!

AFAIK there isnt an english one either........ there is a US one which looks like an english one (old style red with cutaway pic of gen5) but it got dropped when the gen6 came out.

Obviously the toyota manuals are best, but they are a touch expensive- but on eBay you can pick up the odd bargain if your patient.

Hate to plug another club on this site, but over on TOC! we have a lot of info on the JDM features, such as the TEMS suspension, 4WS and Autobox. I'm unsure if you can view as a none member, you will at least have to register- this is the link if you wish to try it:
