There's another bit to this tale apparently.

The original article said there was a competition at the same time to guess the population of the town in 2007, - the prize being the car itself ! But the winner died about thirty years ago and his wife died a few years later, so it eventually got sent off to some nephew or other, who was probably quite surprised when some people came and dropped a rusty car on his drive...

Apparently the most valuable thing were the two containers of petrol it was buried with (they thought at the time that we might have found a better type of fuel and stopped using petrol by now. ha.)- scientists studying how fuel has changed were very keen to get hold of it apparently.
