New To Rav-4 - Just Did First Bit Of Diy

hi! Got the missus a 95 rav 4 4dr couple of weeks back. First time she put petrol in a kind man told her that petrol was pouring out underneath.

Had a check myself when putting juice in - saw it was coming over rubber tube leading to tank. Checked behing filler end - no probs. Removed cover in wheelarch - problem revealed.

Seems that this plastic cover is a neat way of trapping dirt and moisture next to metal filler pipe. It had corroded through - both inlet and breather pipe.

Main dealer quote £85 for part - scrapyard got one for £15 - off a 3 door but was same size(also got spare set steel wheels with good tyres £50 -smashing!)

After a bit of fiddling got old pipe off - (why are plastic cover nuts 10mm but one securing pipe bracket to wheelarch 12mm! - this one sheared - had to drill arch and re fix with self tapper)

Anyway to cut a long story short - all done in about hour and half.

The reason I'm posting this is because the missus, who moaned like hell about the leak, wasn't the slightest bit interested in how I'd done it. Didn't even get a cuppa.

'It's fixed is it?' she asked. 'Yes' I replied, I had to remove the...' 'Don't put those dirty hands on the banister. I'm going to Tesco's. And why do we need all those wheels?'

Should have left her in her megane...

Hi Swanboy, your little story there just bought a massive smile to my face! My missus is exactly the same. We have a 2001 NRG and following several hours work replacing a broken front bumper with paint peeling from it with a brand new freshly painted on, I had a similar response - "have you finished yet" - and then "oh, it doesnt look any different to the old one". So after several hours, scraped knuckles and several swear words it didnt "look any different"...

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! :censor: :censor: :censor:

She is also bored by the story of fixing wipers on an old volvo, elec window on a fiesta, and steering box on an ancient sherpa pick up...

In return I pay no attention to her choice of mobile phones and am not at all interested in text messages her female friends send her and refuse to discuss Big Brother.

I am about to change diff oil on said Rav - she may help by turning the radio on.

Don't worry we'll listen to you.

Have you thought that if you take an interest in all those bottles of cream and skin lotion she has in the bathroom cabinet that she might take an interest in your new toy?

If she doesn't, take out half of those bottles and replace them with some litre bottles of engine and gearbox oil. That should do the trick.

PS. No. When she throws you out I don't have a spare room!
