Yaris D4d - Impressions So Far

Collected my new Yaris TR D4D 3-door 2 weeks ago, and just hit 1000 miles.

Spent the first 500 miles running it in with varying revs and gentle running. I'm told this is the best way to break in diesels, hopefully its right. From day 1 its been returning 52mpg with mixed driving, which I'm happy with. It could do more, but I don't poodle often.

For a small and relatively cheap car, its surprisingly good at everything. I came back from a 450 mile round trip to Cornwall yesterday, having driven 3 passengers and luggage there and back in comfort.

The engines flat spot at very low revs is frustrating, but you get used to it. Above 70 the economy drops off and power dissolves quickly, but you can't expect too much from a 1.4 diesel. I bought it to replace a 1.8 petrol and has done the job very well.

I've been looking at some chips to bring the power up to 109 bhp, and more importantly bring the torque up. What do you all make of these? Does anyone have a chipped diesel?

Yes!

The chip I have (off e-bay at about £130 BIN iirc) works a treat and by fitting that and a reusable panel filter (£35 from Jetex) you will find that the flat spot in the power delivery is significantly lessened. My car has done over 35k with the chip fitted and over 45k with a sports filter fitted (first the Jetex panel one, now a more extreme A'Pexi cone one) with no problems whatsoever in that time.

Where laws and conditions allow mine pulls happily to just over 90 before performance drops off and will cruise forever at 85 or so up and down hills.

More pics, up-to-date garage and stuff here:- http://tinyurl.com/2mwehf

You'll find that it takes a good 8 or 9 thousand miles for the engine to loosen off fully and in that time both performance and economy will improve. Mine has now done 51.5k and its predecessor did 16k before meeting an untimely end...

Thanks for that.

What kind of chip is it? I've seen the piggyback modifications which give the driver a little bit of adjustment, and also total ECU remaps for a little more.

Also, does anyone have any tips for giving the eclipse black paintwork a good finish? When I collected it from the dealer the polishing was very poor, and with the sun shining directly you can see thousands of scratch like lines? I've noticed this a lot on metallic black cars, perhaps it just shows up more.

It is impossible to keep the black in good condition - after 52k the front of mine looks as if I've been firing a shotgun at it and it is scratched all over. The paint is very, very soft. I don't think I'd have another black Toyota - the flat black on the RAVs is just as bad.

The chip I'm talking about is a piggyback chip. Here's the link:- Clicky!

That and a panel filter will give you noticeably more "urge" than standard. For servicing I stoppad at the B&Q across from the dealer to unplug and chuck it in the boot and that was that. No problems!

Alex, how are you finding the TR d4d?

I am planning on getting a TR d4d MMT 3 door sometime in the next few months, so would be interested in any comments you have the TR or d4d in general.

Cheers :)
