Hi can anyone help with this problem. My 2001 MR2 SMT engine warning light came on about a month ago. Sent it into Toyota the next day. They said they couldn't find anything specific and turned off the light. It has now started with a whineing noise which has gradually got louder as time has gone on, it is running ok but is probably a little sluggish from a standing start. Do I need to re mortgage for this one. It has only done 31,000mls

Hi Wendy and welcome to the club!

If Toyota checked the CEL then they would have got a code. It would be well worth getting that off them.

If they've cleared it and then it comes back on they haven't solved the problem and I know (from experience) it's not cheap to read the CEL everytime. BTW, to clear the light, just disconnect the negative terminal of your Battery for 10 mins.

It's always hard to give help on described symptoms and the responses can vary depending on information given, for instance to me it sounds like a transmission problem which can be a bit of a pain with the SMT gearbox so the best course would be to persevere with Toyota, but let us know how things turn out

Welcome to the club by the way
