Could someone who has a Prius confirm if EV mode if available from cold? I had the impression it was but as long as the ICE had not started, ie. you have to press the EV button in the few seconds before the ICE starts.

Yes, is the short answer :) You are correct in your assumptions.

I do it every morning for my daily commute not to disturb my neighbours...

Reading this post recently caused me to press the EV button for the first time, so now I know what it does. I can obviously use it to show off the electric motor to friends, neighbours etc but what did Toyota put it there for, i.e. what is its intended purpose.

Slightly harder acceleration would still remain in electric mode otherwise without EV the slightly harder acceleration will cause the petrol engine to come on. In other words it stays on electric longer than without EV.
