I've been watching some of the T Sport and T Sport Compressor owner's comments about lift and I am reminded of what I was told when I got my VVTI motor from the big T (nice low milage ex-factory manager's car it was). Even though that was an Avensis, I wonder if the VVTLI system on the quick Corollas shared a lot of the same engine management, specifically that each car "learns" and customises its fuel map for its driver's demands on the throttle.

Maybe it was just glib sales patter, lord knows I've had enough well reheubikd "off-the-cuff" presentations from Toyota approved dealers before but I asked them at the time of purchase to reset the system to think I was its first ever driver and so avoid the car having anybody elses bad habits, only mine.

Maybe this is why some owners of TS roller skates report lift coming in in differing circumstances depending on the car...

...Or have I got it all wrong?

Can I get an expert witness?

PS. Test: "reheubikd / r e h e !Removed! d" The words on either side of the forward slash were identical when I spelled them (minus spaces in the second word)... There's something strange about this bulletin board.

Cool! ...but I always thought !Removed! was more of a technical term than a swear word. When I originally wrote, I said "have I got it all to c o c k" and it came out "have I got it all to *****" (yes, five asterisks to replace four letters). I am at a loss as to what "Ubiked" means. Google found instances of the word in various contexts that appear to be similar so I wonder if it is somebody's idea of a "polite" word for !Removed!. Anyway enough mooning about for now, back to the topic...

Cheers Dawesy,

I suppose anyone wanting to experiment could reset their systems. It might be worth recommending for all second-hand purchasers to eliminate any doubts as to whether the correct fuel has always been used in unmodified TTE cars.

I might try that on Jack's car come to think of it. He refuelled with 97 RON because it was the only fuel available on the way back home from the dealer's (200 miles). It pinked a bit as a result but we got a fill with Shell V power which we were assured exceeded the 98 RON specification ('wish they'd put the number on the forcourt pumps like they used to with octane ratings). Sure enough, the pinking went away. As we drove the car more it got better and better - and it was pulling well to start with. It just got superbly smooth on the power delivery. Every time I see him he's got a huge grin on his face so I know the car is good. We don't think it ever went into safe mode as a result of the low spec fuel so it shouldn't be necessary.

Our jack is now increasing his repetoire of party tricks for the road and scaring la merde out of unsuspecting passengers with complete confidence.
