How To Adjust Handbrake?

I find the handbrake too high up when pulled on. I've a 6 month old hatchback and in that time the brake lever seems to have got higher. I'd like to adjust it myself as I've done in other cars.

Usually I have done it by tightening two nuts, either underneath the car or at the handbrake lever itself.

How is it done on the Avensis and is it a difficult job best left to the garage?

If the rear handbrake shoes need adjusting - Remove rear wheels and look on the centre of the discs for a rubber grommet. Spin the disc so that the hole is at the bottom and using a screwdriver adjust the small wheel inside the handbrake drum.

If its just the cable that needs adjusting - remove part of handbrake surround/centre console and you can adjust the cable using a 10mm spanner/socket. There is a 10mm lock nut and the adjusting nut.

Pretty easy to do if you are handy with tools, if not Toyota shouldnt charge you too much and may do it for free if you take it back to the dealer you got it from and tell them you arent happy.

Thanks Martin, it is a 6 month old car and I think it'll just be the cable.
