Pretty Stinky!

Hey guys,

this morning something strange happened. I was still at a red light on a quite steep hill crossing. When ready to go I released the hand break and let the clutch and throttle doing the rest etc. Well, the clutch I thought was slippin nastly so i gave moderate/full throttle coz the car was likin going back! it was there when i started sniffin stinkin smell of burnt like burnt rubber smell. For one second i thought it came from the car in front so i pulled and i tried to make the car going whilst hand break on to challenge the clutch: same stinkin smell. You think it cld be the clutch? Car has 65k miles and zero problems :) It amazed me coz it was so unexpected as ma yts has always been problem free and actuyally wondering when it wld start givin me problems :)!! Becuase the smell really is like burnt rubber what cld it be if not the clutch? is it normal the clutch gives in at about 65K?

Cheers,

P

Quick test:

While stationary with hand brake on, select first gear and try and pull away with the hand brake still on.

If you can lift the clutch and it doesn’t stall, then it sounds like its slipping and on its way out.

So basically you will be sat there in gear with engine revving with clutch out and the brake still on and going nowhere.

It's the clutch lol

How the gears still slot in and out as normal tho? How long can i carry on with that u rekon? A friend was left grounded after his alfa spider stucked in first gear and that was the clutch!

Not long... you need to get it fixed asap or else you won't have any bite on the clutch at all. When it goes it goes. At the moment it's giving you a warning!

As said above it sounds like the clutch is worn/slipping.

This should be sorted ASAP really as the more you use it the more damage you could do to the flywheel as the slipping clutch will make the flywheel face V hot/uneven.

Guys,

I had my 60k service by mr T today (my car has actually 66+k). I was surprised and happy to hear that my clutch is actually fine! After that bad clutch slip i tried more times to test my clutch and i never had the problem repeated. Mr T has tuned it a bit and this has improved the feel and responisveness of my clutch. it's such a relief :P This saved me few quid ahah. Anyway, i still cant explain how that slip occurred?! Anyway my lovely yts still surprises me she feels like new and got zero issues ahah (touch wood uh) :)

How can it be tuned? Can you explain it a little more?

in all honesty i dont know lol. When I collected the car the feel at the pedal was diffrent and so the clutch biting. I suppose the clutch can be tuned in some way?

T V O R is correct,

They can't tune clutches but they can adjust how the pedal makes the plates move...

Most clutches these days are self adjusting, so you don't notice any difference & the 'bite' point stays in the same place on the pedal, even though obviously it can't be staying in the same place while the clutch wears out - It'd actually be moving 'up' the clutches travel, as the plates become thinner (i.e. bites & can move the car forwards, when more pressure is applied / clutch is let out further) :)

It's just a clever mechanism somewhere in between the pedal & the clutch... anyone know how it works, just out of curiosity?
