Hello,

I'm looking for a Toyota Starlet Owner's Workshop Manual for my starlet (1991).

Does anyone have any idea where I can order this?

In the meantime, how is the distributor sealed from the engine? Some kind of ring, or a sealing? There seems to be oil leaking from between the distributor and the engine..

cheers!

Toyota have workshop manuals, but they don't like selling them to the public.

Distributor has a seal on the shaft of the body, likely to have perished.

thanks!

Question: how do I go about replacing this seal (is it an O-ring kind of seal, b.t.w.?)?

You would need to mark the position of the distributor against the engine block, so when you take it off you can line it up again to avoid messing around with timing lights.

It is an o'ring, but you'd need one that was made from oil proof rubber - probably available from an o'ring specialist or directly from Toyota.

I took out the distributor (after marking the position of it against the engine block), and found but one ring.. I do not see that I can get that one off? Is this (the dark ring pointed to with the green arrow) the one that should be taken off? If so..any idea how?

It should be stretchy and with a hook you should be able to lift it off and over the surround.

You oil looks filthy. I'd recommend an engine flush and new oil pronto.

Yes, you are right.. oil is very dirty. Because I had to take the engine out, all the old oil I've drained and I will put in new oil when the engine is back into the car again. What is this "engine flush"?

Also, it seems that the internal O-ring is the one causing oil leaking problems. I've taken apart the distributor, and only need to take out the Shaft pin.. Any advice on how to do that without damaging anything (like the bearing or the distributor shaft itself)?

thanks!

Engine flush is a detergent you add to the oil just before a change. Add it, run the engine for half an hour so it mixes and goes through the system dissolving all the cruddy build ups inside the engine, then when you change the oil, all the engine internals are washed clean. Available everywhere that sells oil really for a few quid !

Sounds good!

Only thing is.. Because I had to take the engine out (changing a freezeplug behind the flywheel..amongst others), I took out all the old oil... I put the engine in the car today (still need to put all the wiring and tubes in to place again), and will have to put in brand new oil...

So, I guess the engine flush will have to wait a bit, if I do not want to spoil the liters of good oil I then just poured into the engine...

b.t.w. I changed the internal O-ring inside the distributor, but really also have to change the external O-ring.. It is not stretchy at all anymore..and a bit flattened as well.. I live on a small tropical island, and I was not able to buy this particular O-ring :(

I guess I will have to leave that for later as well...

I had the same problem. I live on a small but developed island too... what i did was to buy some ultra grey permatex silicone (good cause its thicker than the rest), put it around the same flattened black o' ring and shoved it in the engine head. Important dont move it around just set it back to the original marked position let dry u wont have that prob again. Just make sure u put it evenly around the ring and enough to seal the area.

later...
