We Still Have The Stalling Problem.

Back in January i posted a thread asking about a stalling problem our hiace 2.4TD has. After about 15 miles of driving, some of which over about 40mph, the car will stall.

Mainly it will stall when you put it in Reverse but after a longer drive it will do it in Drive at junctions.

When it stalls in reverse the revs slowly drop until it shakes and stalls.

At junctions it just stalls with no symptoms.

The only way you know it might do it is because the engine starts churning and sounds like an old bus (the best i can describe it!).

A friend of ours said that the cause could be a fuel cut off solenoid which has fallen apart inside and when it gets hot enough it stalls the car but the contacts are close enough to let the car be started again.

It's the only lead we have so far unfortunately, does it sound likely and does anyone have the part number of the part to hand?

Thanks :)

Kyle

What speed does it tick over at when cold and hot, also have you changed all filters and used injector cleaner.

I'll check the tickover next time i'm in the car, but it's nothing out of the ordinary. The filters were changed earlier in the year but injector cleaner hasn't been used. Is there a specific type i need to get or is it universal?

I forgot to mention that there is also a burning smell for a few seconds when you stop at a junction when the engine has heated up. The temperature never goes above half way.

It went very well today doing about 10 miles. It is normally the return journey on which the stalling happens but we went through a town centre with plenty of stops and it didn't show any symptoms of doing it

Buy this brand of cleaner, http://www.toyotahilux.com/?doc=16&cid=152&vid=839 and fit a new fuel filter, also do as it say's and fill the new filter with the fluid, then prime it and run it down the road for a few miles, might smoke a bit but will give the engine a good clean.

When you say burning smell, do you mean oil or rubber, do you have any signs of oil leaks under the engine.

After reading through your post again I see it's an Auto, so have you changed the transmission fluid, try dipping it and see what colour it is.

I suppose i should have mentioned its my parents car and i'm trying to get the problem traced :) I will do the filter and cleaner when my dad is off next weekend and the engine is cool enough to work on after he gets back.

The ATF is reddish pink and the level is a bit high but ok. The oil and water are at correct levels too. The idle when cold is 700-800rpm and about 700rpm hot.

The smell is rubber/plastic i think but i'm not sure.

It stalled today in reverse after 15 miles with 10 miles at 65mph. The return journey was fine, 30-40mph and through towns, no problem with stalling at junctions but felt like it would have stalled in reverse.

I think my dad is taking it to a specialist diesel/auto garage to get it plugged in incase it is more serious than something DIY.

Thanks for the help so far :)

  • 1 month later...

With the engine at normal operating temp I'd bring the idle upto 800-850rpm......700 is below spec....

(The temp guages will show normal even when overheating btw).

You might check all the vacuum pipes for splits etc....especially round the rear bulkhead

Check the EGR system could be slightly open causing the stall---Check idle control system valve could be stuck---Clean throttle plate could be full of carbon
