Fuel Gauge Problem

The other day out driving i noticed after a good few miles, (using some good boost) the fuel gauge stopped moving at half a tank.... Then the fuel light came on a while after. So i put petrol in and the gauge went a little higher, but not much. (I guess this means that the fuse must be ok if the gauge moved at all)

So guys, any ideas what the problem might be??
