Yaris Disc Replacement

My Yaris has always been main dealer services and at around 36000 miles, I'm told that the front discs need replacing and that the work is not covered by the warranty. This strikes me as outrageous. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

Brakes are classed as "wear and tear" items so therefore are not covered under warranty, unless you can prove they are defective.

yeah unfortunatly jst had the same problem had to Shell out £150 quid for new disks n pads n fitting :(

Really? I accept that components such as tyres, brake pads, brake shoes, the clutch friction plate, belts are considered "wear and tear", but I'm sorry - discs are part of the car that I regard as needing to be of "merchantable quality" for considerably longer than 36,000 miles. What next? The starter motor fails - "you've been using it start the car sir". The gearbox fails - "well, you have been changing gear, sir". You take my point. Have anyone successfully challenged this blatant piece of wallet gouging?

I don't think the gearbox and starter motor are in the same league as brake discs. Its wear and tear mate, its one of the many expenses of owning a car!

How can you class the pads but not the discs as wear and tear? They are part of the same system. Generally speaking you should replace both at the same time.

For info you can do it yourself, its not difficult. IIRC 2 bolts per caliper - thats it. Discs don't have to be bought from Toyota either there are plenty of reputable suppliers online which are cheaper.

36k is reasonable mileage for discs. How have they been treated over that mileage? A heavy and late breaker would wear them out much sooner than that.

Gearbox & starter motor etc is another ball park altogether and should last the life of the engine ie easily over 100k depending on how the engine is treated.

Don't get angry, take a look and measure the disc by your self, and compare it to what toyota says about the minimum thickness, and decide for your self if they should be changed or not. (e.g.: I have a neighbour running with 12mm of thickness, instead of a minimum 16)

Pardon? that is total hollyhocks!! Some "Yari" are known to wear out pads in under 10,000 miles, are you suggesting the discs should be worn also? I very think not!

It may be a bit borderline at 36,00 miles, perhaps it is the age of the car too. I would try another Toyota outlet, they may change 'em under warranty. Mind, i have still good life in my first set of PADS, at nearly 30,000 miles, on an automatic, (usually wear quicker) so driving habits make a lot of difference.

They wern't Skimmed during previous services were they - for say pitting to the sufrace or anything like that.

Good trick they play so the next time you go in they say they have to be replaced as they are two thin - yes that's because you skimmed them last year taking a good 3mm off.

If they are worn then it's just poor materials.

Got shut of mine before I got to that point.

Just browsing to see what people think about the Aygo as the missus is looking at one, seems that's got it's problems as well. They all have damn good engines it's just a shame about the build quality.

£150!? BARGAIN!!!!!! In january toyota told me that i needed to replace my pads and discs for just under £300! I told them b******s, got them checked by my machanic mate and he said there was no problem with the pads or the discs, 8 months down the line ive just replaced the pads for £35. Set of blue print, think they are a japanese specialist brand? They are minters, better than the Bosch things i had in previously!

If they are worn out (scored due to worn pads) then you are getting your wallet out, sorry but wear and tear is a fact of life. There is a case for skimming discs, because of warpage, under warranty, you would get the pads replaced as well in that scenario. I could list a dozen items not covered, and thousands that are, IMHO 36K is not bad for a pair of discs, considering the modern, very hard pads that are fitted to modern cars, go back a few years and you only ever wore pads out, then somebody had the cheek to ban asbestos, I dunno, what is the world coming to. Just bought a Yaris 1.0 GS. Meant to have come with a service MOT and HPI check. Done 1,500 miles now and when braking I get an awful grinding noise as I come to a stop. It is also quite bad when i am turning left.

I guess this is something to do with break pads being mounted incorrectly. The garage didnt provide me with service details or the hpi certificate. I've booked it into the Toyota dealership in Reading.

1)Was I conned by the garage I bought it off?

2)Would the problem be covered by my warrenty (valid if I go to any vat registered garage)

3)Anyone have any experience of Reading Toyota? They seemed nice.

PS -I know very little about cars

I think that, by law, the vehicle must now have some sort of warranty, even if used, if sold by a dealer. Also must be of merchantable quality, fit for the purpose intended, ( driving and stopping is intended) and in a roadworthy condition. If they wont fix it, for free, complain to the local trading standards officer.

They ( the dealer) will probably be trying to get you back in to fix it before they are in trouble.

Just to clarify for anyone who didn't know - You can replace pads without doing the discs, but if you do the discs you really should change the pads too! You might as well change the brake fluid while you're at it as well, it's not that expensive and will make the brake pedal feel firmer & nicer to use - If you want to, replace it with decent DOT 5.1 fluid - You never know, it might save someones life.

Don't skimp on brakes and tyres, I say :-)

Apparently although the garage I bought the car from was meant to do a full service the brake pads were a minimum of 90-95% worn and in some areas I was braking on the disks (hence the grinding noise as I stopped). £250 to repair all at Reading Toyota (they replaced a wind screen wiper for good measure) and they didnt charge me for labour on replacing the discs.

Now I have problems with my cd player and the left side indicator light cover just came off in my hand!! have i bought a lemon?

PS -anyone know of any good floor mats as these ones need replacing
